Title: Nuclear Fission vs. Fusion and the forces of the nucleus

1
Nuclear Fission vs. Fusionand the forces of the
nucleus
2
Nuclear Stability- types of forces
  • Strong Force attraction between proton and
    neutron
  • Repulsive Force protons HATE each other due to
    like charges

3
  • Describe the forces in a stable nucleus vs. an
    unstable nucleus.

4
Nuclear Stability
  • The nucleus is stable when
  • Strong Force is greater than the Repulsive force
  • The nucleus is unstable when
  • Repulsive force is greater than strong force
  • Nuclear decay starts!! (alpha, beta, gamma)

5
Nuclear Fission
  • Nucleus splits into 2 or more atoms
  • Releases ENERGY and neutron(s)
  • Lots of energy from a small amount of mass

6
Chain Reaction
  • In a power plant the chain reaction is controlled
so it releases a safe amount of energy
  • Nuclear Bombs NO control!!

7
Nuclear Fusion
  • Needs very high temps (10,000,000 C)
  • Produces MORE energy than fission
  • Responsible for formation of all the elements in
the universe and the energy of the sun and stars
