Title: Converting from Polar Notation to Rectangular Notation and BACK

1
Converting from Polar Notation to Rectangular
Notation and BACK
  • By Naomi Scharf and Mackenzie Rumburg

2
Polar to Rectangular..
r
y
theta
x
  • The sin of theta is equal to the y divided by
    r
  • The cos of thata is equal to the x divided by
    r
  • Solve both equations and you have the coordinates
    (x,y) which is rectangular notation

3
Rectangular to Polar..
r
y
theta
x
  • The tan of theta is equal to the y over x
  • The sin of theta is equal to y over r
  • Solve for theta in the first equation and r
in the second equation to get (r,theta) which is
    polar notation

4
Example Polar to Rectangular
  • (20,90deg)
  • Sin90y/20
  • Cos90x/20
  • Y20, X0
  • The answer is rectangular notation is (0,20)

5
Example Rectangular to Polar
  • (5,10)
  • Tan(theta)10/5
  • Theta63.4
  • Sin63.410/r
  • R11.2
  • The answer in polar notation is (11.2,63.4deg)

6
Practice ProblemPolar to Rectangular
  • (7,180deg)

7
Answer Polar to Rectangular
  • (-7,0)

8
