Official Crime Rates Decrease
  • Crimes are recorded. The crime figures in England
and Wales are decreasing as they are in most
    European countries
  • Here are some of the possible reasons as to why
    crime figures are decreasing
  • More people are in work now and so do not get
    involved in crime.
  • More people can afford to buy things that they
    previously may have stolen.
  • Cars and houses are now better protected.
  • The government have put a lot of effort into
getting certain kinds of crime down.
  • People dont walk around with so much cash as
they have credit cards so there are less
    opportunities to commit crime.
  • There may be just as much crime but large amounts
of it may not go unreported.
  • 1. Why might crime statistics in England and
    Wales be decreasing?

4
Fear of Crime
  • Despite the fact that official crime statistics
are going down many people increasingly live in
    fear of crime.
  • Peoples fear of crime does not relate to the
actuality of crime (people are less likely to
become a victim of crime than they think).
  • Young males are more likely to be the victim of
crime than any other group of people. Does this
    surprise you?
  • There is no doubt that crime is still a huge
problem and that some areas may be getting worse
but this does not account for the high levels of
    fear of crime.

5
Reasons for fear of crime
There has been an increase in crimes that make
the news e.g. racial attacks. If its in the news
people get to hear about it.
There is a lot of crime shows on TV
Opposing politicians try to make the government
look weak by playing up crime figures
Crime is always on the news and in the newspapers.
People no longer know there neighbours. They live
amongst strangers and fear them.
People have been victims of crime or know people
who have and word spreads fast.
Many older people have had to be re-housed and
live in areas that feel strange to them. The
strangeness makes them fearful.
2. What reasons are there for fear of crime?
6
Young People in the Media
  • Young people are often shown in a negative way in
the media. Especially in national newspapers.
  • The majority of young people are law-abiding but
this does not make interesting news and so is not
    reported upon.
  • Instead stories of young people who brake the law
regularly make the news. Such stories lead to the
idea that the youth of today is out of control.

3. Why do some people think that the youth of
today are out of control?
7
Negative Images of Young People in the Newspapers
  • You need a newspaper article showing young
    people in a negative way.
  • Stick the newspaper article onto your work.
  • Briefly explain the incident that the article
    reports on?
  • What image of young people does the article give?
  • Do you think that the article would have made the
news even if the offenders had not been young
    people?
  • How do you think that article may affect fear of
    crime?

8
Positive Images of Young People in the Newspapers
  • Work in a group of 4.
  • Create a collage of positive images of young
    people.
  • Challenge the stereotypes of young people that
    the media sometimes portrays.
  • The purpose of your collage is to show that the
majority of young people are good, honest
citizens. That the majority of young people
enhance the local community rather than pose a
    threat to it.
