  • March 27, 1775- Thomas Jefferson is elected to
    the Continental Congress to represent Virginia.
  • March 27, 1829- President Andrew Jackson defies
    Washington society matrons and appoints
    scandal-plagued John Eaton as his secretary of
    war.
  • March 27, 1836- In a disastrous setback for the
    Texans resisting Santa Annas dictatorial regime,
    the Mexican army defeats and executes 417 Texas
    revolutionaries at Goliad.
  • March 27, 1865- President Abraham Lincoln meets
    with Union generals Ulysses S. Grant and William
    T. Sherman meet at City Point, Virginia, to plot
    the last stages of the Civil War.
  • March 27, 1939- The University of Oregon defeats
    The Ohio State University 4633 on this day in
    1939 to win the first-ever NCAA mens basketball
    tournament.
  • March 27, 1958- Soviet First Secretary Nikita
    Khrushchev replaces Nicolay Bulganin as Soviet
    premier, becoming the first leader since Joseph
    Stalin to simultaneously hold the USSRs two top
    offices.

The South Secedes

Raid on Harpers Ferry
  • John Brown tried to start uprising in 1858.
  • Planned to arm local slaves by attacking federal
    arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
  • John Browns raid began on night of October 16,
    1859, when he and his men took over arsenal.
  • Brown was convicted of treason, murder, and
    conspiracy, and was hanged.
  • Many northerners mourned his death, but
    criticized methods.
  • Most southern whites felt threatened, and
    newspapers started to call for leaving the Union
    in order to remain safe.

Secession
  • Lincoln insisted he would not change slavery in
    South, but would not let it expand.
  • South Carolina legislature met to consider
    secession, formally withdrawing from the Union.
  • South Carolina seceded on December 20, 1860,
    believing it had the right because it had
    voluntarily joined the Union.

The Confederacy
  • Early in 1861 Mississippi, Florida, Alabama,
    Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas joined South
    Carolina to form Confederate States of America.
  • Jefferson Davis of MS was elected Confederate
    president.
  • Senator John Crittenden proposed a series of
    constitutional amendments (Crittendens
    Compromise) hoping to satisfy the South by
    protecting slavery.
  • Lincoln believed there could be no compromise
    about the extension of slavery, and the plan was
    rejected.

The Confederacy
  • On Feb. 8, 1861 the seceding states formed the
    CSA.
  • Each state was independent, guaranteed slavery,
    banned tariffs, and limited president to single 6
    year term.
  • Jefferson Davis was elected president.

The War Begins
  • On April 12, 1861 the Confederates bombarded
    Union troops at Fort Sumter in South Carolina
    when Lincoln tried to resupply.
  • After Fort Sumter the upper south seceded.
  • Lincoln declared martial law in the border states.
