Title: Organisms and Their Environment

1
Organisms and Their Environment
2
Why are we studying the environment?
  • -Understanding what affects the environment is
important because its where we live!

3
I. Ecology
  • Ecology- is the scientific study of interactions
among organisms and between organisms and their
    physical environment.

4
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
  • Biosphere- consists of all life on Earth and all
parts of the Earth in which life exists,
including land, water, and the atmosphere.

5
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
  • Biomes- a group of ecosystems that share similar
    climates and typical organisms.
  • Ex Marine biome Tropical isle of Bikini Atol
in Pacific Ocean, (Bikini Bottom boxed)

6
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
Ecosystems- All the organisms that live in a
place, together with their physical environment.

7
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
Communities All the organisms that live in a
place, together with their physical
environment. Ex Spongebob, his neighbors,
friends, employer
8
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
Population- a group of individuals that belong to
the same species and live in the same area. Ex
Spongebob and his parents
9
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
Individual organism (species)- a group of similar
organisms that can breed and produce fertile
offspring. Ex Spongebob is a sponge
10
II. Levels of Organization in Ecology
  • Biosphere (biggest group)
  • Biome
  • Ecosystem
  • Community
  • Population
  • Organism
  • (smallest group)

Does the number of individuals go up or down as
we go from biosphere to oragnism?
11
III. Biotic vs Abiotic Factors
  • Biotic living (BIO life)
  • Biotic factors- any living part of the
environment with which an organism might
    interact.
  • For Spongebob this would include various fishes,
crabs and sea creatures, the jellyfish, Gary,
    Plankton

12
III. Biotic vs Abiotic Factors
  • Abiotic non-living
  • Abiotic factors- any nonliving part of the
environment, such as sunlight, heat, water
    currents, soil type.
  • For Spongebob this would be various things like
bubbles, the water, sand, buildings, boatmobiles
