Welcome to Pangbourne Primary School Maths
Information Evening This is the way we do it !
Calculation Methods Used In Pangbourne School
Today
2
Why helping at home is important
  • Maths is one of the most important subjects that
    your child studies at school.
  • Current teaching methods for maths
  • Children do really benefit when
  • parents take a keen interest in their
    mathematical learning.

3
Adult attitude to maths
  • Is this you?
  • My first thoughts of mathematics are fear, not
being able to do it and feeling inferior.

4
DfEE
  • Parents who are confident about Numeracy tend to
have children who are also confident, and these
children are ready to tackle and assimilate new
ideas in a way that is impossible for children
who feel uncertain about, or even fear, Numeracy.

5
  • Skill for life
  • We all use Numeracy all day everyday!
  • We look at the clock to tell the time before we
    get out of bed.
  • We estimate how far it is to the floor!
  • We know how many degrees to turn the tap so that
we get enough water without getting soaked!
  • We measure the cornflakes in our bowl so they
    don't spill over!
  • Well you get the picture!

Aims

  • Try activities to develop calculation strategies
  • To look at ways in which you as parents can help
    your children

8
How has mathematics changed?
  • Daily mathematics lesson
  • Emphasis on mental calculations
  • Interactive whole class and group teaching
  • Enjoyable practical approaches
  • Mathematics with understanding

9
Mental calculations
  • Children are encouraged to count in different
    ways and to calculate mentally.
  • Number lines Bead bar / number stick /
individual number lines / Number ladders

10
Calculations
  • The aim is that children will always be able to
recognise when calculations can be done in
their heads and choose effective and efficient
strategies to work out the answers.

11
Workshops
  • Weve provided a carousel of workshops on all
    four calculation areas
  • Each session will last approximately 10 minutes.
  • A bell will go after 10 minutes to signal it is
time to switch to next workshop.
  • Your first session is according to the number you
    were given on arrival.
  • Please wait until you are guided to your next
session by a member of staff.
