Title: Author addresses with Bibexcel

1
Author addresses with Bibexcel
2
In Web of Science, you find author addresses in
the C1-field, and also in the RP(Reprint author)
field. Some records only have RP field. For more
recent years author names within brackets are
inserted before the address.
C1- Hsu, Ping-Yu Natl Cent Univ, Dept Business
Adm, Tao Yuan, Taiwan Su, Yu-Min Natl Chengchi
Univ, Dept Comp Sci, Taipei 11623, Taiwan Pai,
Ning-Yao Natl Chiao Tung Univ, Inst Informat
Management, Hsinchu, Taiwan RP- Hsu, PY, Natl
Cent Univ, Dept Business Adm, Tao Yuan, Taiwan
Addresses also have different sub parts, like
main organization first and country last.
Bibexcel can help analyzing these various aspects
3
Removing authors in brackets from addresses
Make an out-file based on C1 field and as Whole
field intact
4
You can see the brackets here
Now, from the menu run Edit outfiles/Remove ..
from whole field
5
The wcm-file has no brackets!
Now, from the menu run Edit outfiles/Decompress
outfile
6
The nnu-file has one address in each row
To be able to handle countries etc, you should
replace commas with slashes, so run Edit
outfiles/Convert comma-delimited addresses
7
The odr-file has now slashes and a double slash
before country names
8
Make these settings and press Start
9
View the oux-file that has country names, with
duplicates removed!
10
If you wish to make use also of the RP-field and
remove brackets with author names, there is a
routine that makes all of this. Select the
doc-file and run Edit outfiles/Standardize
addresses/Clean and add address fields. You will
get some questions and you should answer YES or
OK to all of them. This will produce an oux-file!
Now you can go on and run Edit outfiles/Convert
comma-delimited addresses..
11
Suppose you would like to study author names
connected to addresses. Then we would need to
create a file with one column for addresses and
one for authors.
12
We have made an out-file on C1-field whole and
intact
13
Run this on the out-file
14
The oxx-file has one address and one author per
row. However, some rows will not have authors,
since records sometimes lack that information.
Therefore you may need to open the file in Excel
and delete unwanted rows. I saved the edited file
with the same name, cocit569.oxx.
15
then I recommend that you standardize author
names by selecting columns 1 and 3 from the
oxx-file, using Edit out-files/Select columns.
Result is in cocit569.col.
16
Select cocit569.col and run this. Answer Yes to
next question
17
Look at the cocit569.loa file that now has a list
of standardized author names.
18
In Excel I added the standardized names in column
D, and I recommend you use that instead of column
C.
..of course you may proceed to standardize
addresses or you may select rows for a
particular country, or university, to make a
study of the internal network
19
I decided to study interaction among scholars
from Belgium and Netherlands. First, select
relevant rows into a new file.
20
Now, the bne-file has the relevant rows. To
continue making a network of authors- select
column 1 and 4- remove duplicate names
21
The oux-file is deduplicated and can be used for
making co-authorship pairs.
22
Since there are not many authors we can run this
routine
23
The coc-file now has the co-authorship pairs that
can be used for mapping with Pajek
24
The Pajek map shows only one mixed cluster with
authors from Belgium in yellow and from
Netherlands in red.
25
  • Suppose you would like to use fractional counting
by using the authoraffiliation data in the
oxx-file. Each author is given the same fraction,
but if the author has several affiliations in the
same article his fraction will be reduced
    accordingly.
  • Select the doc-file and make a outfile on the
    C1-field with whole field intact
  • Select the out-file and run Edit out-file/Extract
author names and addresses from C1 field.
  • Select the oxx-file and run Edit out-files/Select
    and swap two columns
  • Select the swp file and run Edit
    outfiles/Decompress extra
  • Select the nnx-file and deduplicate by using
Whole string, Remove Duplicates/Make new outfile
  • Select the oux-file and run Analyze/Calculate
    authoraffiliation fractions
  • Results are in the frf-file that you can open
from within Excel. Some rows lack authors. For
summing over authors, you should add authors to
    the oxx-file.

Now, make you own download of papers and run this
exercise on it! You can start with papers from
your own university. Good Luck!
27
BibExcel can handle fractional counting that
takes multiple affiliations in a given paper into
consideration. The procedure is called
Analyze/Calculate authorsaffiliation
fractions But first follow the instructions below!
