What is a juvenile?

• A juvenile is a child or a youth under 18 (17)
  years of age.
• There are different types of juveniles
  delinquent juveniles, unruly juveniles,
  deprived juveniles.

What happens when a juvenile is arrested?

• 1.) The juvenile is taken into custody
• a.) Placed in a detention center
• b.) Released to parents/guardians
• 2.) Intake Decision no action, informal
• adjustment, or filing a petition for a
• formal hearing.
• 3.) Formal Hearing two parts
• a.) adjudication (judgement)
• b.) disposition (sentencing) released
  to
• parents, probation, or Dept. of Juvenile
• Justice prevent delinquents from
  becoming adult \
• offenders.
