• could hold 2500-3000 people
• costumes and props were elaborate for the time
  period

• did not have a roof over the central yard
• cheapest way to see a play was as a groundling
  standing in the central yard cost one penny
• galleries had seats and a roof seat cost 2
  pennies
• stage was a thrust stage
• burnt down 1613 rebuilt 1614 demolished 1644
  replica constructed and opened in 1997 (mile away
  from original location)

• surrounded by the audience on three sides
• no barrier existed between performers and
  spectators

• plays were performed during the summer in the
  open-air theater in winter they were performed
  in private, indoor theaters
