Title: An Introductory Refresher to CAS

1
An Introductory Refresher to CAS
2
Why is CAS part of IB?
  • The International Baccalaureate aims to develop
inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people
who help to create a better and more peaceful
    world through intercultural understanding and
    respect.These programmes encourage students
across the world to become active, compassionate
and lifelong learners who understand that other
people, with their differences, can also be
    right.
  • - IB Mission Statement

3
The Nature of CAS
if you believe in something, you must not just
think or talk or write, but must act. -
Peterson (2003)
  • CAS involves
  • Real, purposeful activities with significant
    outcomes
  • Personal challenge
  • Thoughtful consideration
  • Reflection

4
Learning Outcomes
  • As a result of CAS as a whole (including
    proposals and reflections), students should
  • Increase their self-awareness
  • Undertake new challenges
  • Plan and initiate activities
  • Work collaboratively with others
  • Show perseverance and commitment
  • Engage globally
  • Consider the ethical implications of their
    actions
  • Develop new skills

5
How to Get There
  • Plan
  • Identify goals
  • Act
  • Real tasks, concrete experience
  • Observe
  • Think and analyze
  • Reflect
  • Identify achievements and challenges
  • Evaluate actions
  • Apply learning in new situations

6
Range of Activities
  • All students should be involved in CAS activities
    that have been self-initiated.
  • There should be a variety of length and amount of
commitment required by the various activities.
  • Students should be involved with at least one
project involving teamwork that integrates all
aspects of CAS and is of significant duration.

Sample Proposal
  • Brief description of activity and what you hope
    to gain from it
  • I have been asked to participate in a haunted
field maze for a church group called Young Life.
I am excited to partake in this because it will
allow me to meet new people, contribute to my
church, and have fun at the same time! For the
learning outcomes, I hope to learn how to work
more collaboratively with others and develop new
skills of acting and giving entertainment to
    others.

9
Sample Reflection
  • This experience showed that I have the capability
to push through nerves and learn to become more
outgoing while interacting with new friends. Not
only did I contribute towards the church funds,
but I gained more self-confidence and the
realization that I can complete challenges that I
have thought impossible before. The toughest act
I had to do was scream at the top of my lungs on
command! It was nerve racking to begin with since
I had never met some of the other actors, and I
had also never screamed before! Now knowing that
I achieved this makes me believe that I can do
more difficult tasks in the future.

10
