Title: JRN 440 Adv. Online Journalism Intro. to Illustrator

1
JRN 440Adv. Online JournalismIntro. to
Illustrator
  • Monday, 2/20/12

2
Class Objectives
  • Lecture
  • Intro to Illustrator
  • Homework
  • Ex. 4 and 5 due by 205 pm 2/29/12

3
The interface
  • Similar to Photoshop (surprise!)
  • Tools, menus, palettes
  • No history palette (have to do undos)
  • Instead of foreground and background color, you
have a fill and a stroke color
  • Fill is inside of a closed shape
  • Stroke is line or outside of a closed shape

4
Tutorials
  • address highed.atomiclearning.com
  • login mcom_adv
  • password mcomttuad
  •
  • Go to "Training Library"
  • Then to "Technology Skills"
  • Then to "English
  • Look for Illustrator tutorials

5
Tools
  • Selection tool (black arrow) moves things around
    and resizes (e.g. a rectangle)
  • Be careful about resizing things if you dont
want to click in the middle of the object to
    move
  • Direct selection tool (white arrow) is more
    specific in what it selects
  • You will use this with diagonal select and
zooming in and out a lot (look for hollow and
    closed anchor points)
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vJ7CpHuHomUg (3 ½
    minutes)

6
Type tool
  • Can be just like typing in Word
  • But acts like a vector shape in that it can be
    transformed (scaled and skewed)
  • Has typical properties (color, typeface, size,
    kerning, leading, horizontal scale)
  • Be careful about filling and stroking text!
  • Need to go back to select or direct select tool
    to move textbox
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vrP2A55p_4iEfeature
related (start at 50, 10 minutes)

7
The almighty Pen tool
  • Used to create more complex shapes than the
paintbrush or pencil tool, or shapes
  • Can create open or closed paths
  • Both have strokes and fills (be careful if not a
closed path and you want the shape to be stroked
    completely)
  • Little circle shows you that shape will close
  • Parts to a path line, anchor points, bezier
    handles
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vEZTj5YQxGLc (5
    minutes)
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?v5DzpT8POAME (27
    minutes)

8
Shading in Vector
  • Download and open the three files on the Images
    webpage, under 2d Vector
  • Cat no stroke
  • Medical stroke
  • Bird in hand gradient
  • Notice the different ways of coloring and shading
    in each.
  • Google vector infographics

9
Breaking down shading
  • Look at each shape (can you re-draw with shapes
    or just with pen)
  • Look for stroke and fill colors
  • Look for linear and radial gradients

10
Gradient Tool
  • First, need to draw a closed shape
  • Next, open up gradients panel
  • Select the type of gradient
  • Select your colors
  • Use RGB, CMYK, or color swatches
  • If you use HSB
  • Make Saturation 100 (to start)
  • Brightness 100 (to start)
  • Then select your hue
  • Gradient Tool tutorial (4 minutes)
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vjPQxbIvSNJIfeature
    related

11
Gradient Tool
  • To change angle of gradient (make sure your
object is selected) type it in the gradient
    palette
  • To add another color to gradient, click below
    gradient slider
  • Set blend by clicking on white squares above
  • If you want to change back to a solid fill, at
the bottom of your tools palette, select the
    solid fill Color icon

12
Mesh Gradients (advanced- on your own)
  • The Gradient Mesh tool is used to create more
    complex gradients
  • Draw a shape
  • Click on the Gradient Mesh tool
  • Click on the shape
  • You control colors by selecting the nodes (you do
not use the Gradient Tool Palette)
  • Once you have a MG, you cant undo it!
  • No stroke with MG
  • Go to highered website, Intro to Illustrator CS
    4, Creating a Gradient Mesh Object 1 and 2
