  • When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the war
    officially began
  • Great Britain and France declared war on Germany
  • Because of alliances, the war began as Germany,
    Italy and Japan against Britain and France

Axis Advances
  • Hitler used a tactic called Blitzkrieg, or
    lightning war
  • By 1941, Germany had taken over Denmark, Norway,
    the Netherlands, Belgium, and France
  • Italy had seized the Balkans and parts of North
    Africa
  • Japan had taken French, British and Dutch
    colonies in Southeast Asia

  • Germany bombed British cities to wear them down
    for an eventual takeover
  • The British invasion never happened because of
    Germanys defeat in Russia
  • In 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, bringing the
    United States into the war

Turning the Tide
  • In 1942, Allied troops began pushing back the
    Axis powers in North Africa
  • The Allies were able to defeat the Axis powers in
    Italy and in The Soviet Union
  • On June 6, 1944 (D-Day) Allies landed on the
    coast of France and liberate France
  • On May 7, 1945, Germany surrenders

The Holocaust Revealed
  • With the defeat of Germany, the Allies were able
    to liberate the concentration camps
  • Gas chambers were used to kill about 6 million
    Jews, Poles, Gypsies, political enemies, and
    undesirables

  • WWII ended when Japan was defeated in 1945 by the
    United states
  • The United states dropped the atomic bomb on
    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  • WWII was the most destructive war in history
  • 30 million people in Europe died, 60 million
    people in the world died
  • Millions of homeless wandered the streets because
    of bombed out homes
