Dealing with dissent
  • Topics of discussion
  • Venting vs dissenting
  • Positioning
  • Foul recognition / selection
  • Dealing with technical area (Ask, tell, dismiss)
  • Parents / Spectators The dos and donts
  • Player management what are you getting out of
    your cards?

24
Venting vs Dissenting
  • You MUST deal with all instances of dissent
  • If you ignore dissent, game control will be
    impacted
  • Venting Immediate complaint about a call or
non-call is not really dissent, let the players
    express their opinion BRIEFLY!
  • Emotional responses if it persist or is
    repetitive you must take action
  • Dissent The public nature of the actions (who
can see it, who can hear it)
  • Continually asking question to undermine
    authority
  • Repeated moaning about decisions

25
Dissent by word or action
  • Dissent by word
  • Offensive
  • Insulting
  • Provocative
  • Abusive
  • Dissent by Action Actions that convey
    aggressiveness towards an official
  • Running aggressively towards an official
  • Invading the body space of an official
  • Players surrounding an official (Ref mob)
  • Pressuring an official to change a call

26
Positioning
  • Work Rate
  • Must match or exceeds the intensity of the match.
  • Its hard to argue a call / non-call if the
referee is in perfect position to sell the
    call!
  • High work rate conveys the message that the
officials are engaged in the game
  • Do not look for trouble! Be aware of your
positioning on dead ball situations and after a
    game critical decision.
  • Let's discuss this video

27
Foul recognition / selection
  • Remember. Its their game, not yours!
  • Adjust your foul selection according to age and
    skill level
  • Good foul selection equals good game management

28
Dealing with technical area
  • Be courteos and polite
  • Please and Thank you will make a difference
  • DO NOT BULLY coaches / admin staff Remember,
you should be the voice of reason. Also, you
dont like to be treated that way!
  • Ask Tell Dismiss
  • Avoid getting face to face with coaches / admin
staff its a human reaction to get defensive
    when personal space is invaded
  • Be accountable If you say youre going to do
    something DO IT!

29
Parents / Spectators
  • Be courteos and polite
  • Please and Thank you will make a difference
  • Parents dont know that they dont know!
  • Avoid getting in conversations with spectators
    (for obvious reasons)
  • Let's see!

30
Player management
  • What are you getting from your cards? when
giving cautions, we must get get something
    meaningful in return
  • Card Mechanics
  • Give a stronger/longer blast of your whistle
  • Add an administrative whistle
  • Evaluate the flash point
  • Quickly isolate the offender
  • Showtime! Now the stage is yours!
  • Get to the point Never finish your statement
    with a question
  • Show the card like you mean it!
