  • Que?

2
Les mots interrogatifs
We are already familiar with several words used
for asking information questions
  • Comment tappelles-tu? How do you call yourself?
  • Doù viens-tu? Where do you come from?
  • Quand va-t-il? When is he going?

3
Les adverbes interrogatifs
  • Comment?
  • Combien?
  • Quand?
  • Où?
  • Doù?
  • Pourquoi?

These are adverbs because they modify a verb

  • Quoi?

These are pronouns because they could be replaced
with a noun.

  • Note that que becomes quoi after a verb
  • Que cherches-tu? Tu cherches quoi?

6
Les adjectifs intérrogatifs
  • Quel (s) / le(s)?

All forms are pronounced kell
These are used with a noun to ask what or
which.
7
Par example
  • ______ est le nom de ton prof?
  • Whats the name of your teacher?
  • __________ sont tes livres?
  • Which (ones) are your books?

______ es du Sénégal? Who is from
Senegal? _______ fais-tu? What are you doing?

    français?

  • ___________ tu pleures?
  • Why are you crying?

10
Jai une question
There are several ways to ask a question in
French, besides using question-asking words. One
way is to simply place the subject after the
verb, and change the inflection of your voice
  • Charles est dans la librairie.
  • s v

Est-ce que Charles est dans la librairie ? v
s
11
Autre question
Sometimes the written question marks and the
rising tone of the speakers voice alone may
indicate the difference between a statement and a
question
  • Il y a une fête demain.

Il y a une fête demain?
12
Encore une question
Sometimes you can add a tag word such as non? or
nest-ce-pas? to the end of a sentence, much as
you might add no?, right?, etc., in English
  • Il y a une fête aujourdhui, nest-ce-pas?
  • There is a party at school today, right?

Pierre est malade, non? Pedro is sick, no?
13
When answering questions, pay attention to the
verb form. The verb form in the answer will be
based on the question.
If the question is asked of you, the answer is
in the I form. If the question asks about him,
then the answer is also about him, etc.
EVERY sentence (answer) must have a subject and a
verb.
