Title: Use Medians and Altitudes

Use Medians and Altitudes
• Chapter 5.4

2
What is a median?
• A median is a line that connects a midpoint with
a vertex in a triangle.
• If you draw all 3 medians, they will intersect at
a point called the centroid.

Assume Q is a centroid, what are the lengths of
QW and SW?

Assume Q is a centroid. How many sides can you

Graphing medians and centroids
• Recall that the midpoint formula is
• Find the midpoint of each side of the triangle
and connect the midpoint to the opposite vertex.
• The centroid will be the point of intersection.

What is the coordinate of the centroid?

What is an altitude?
• The altitude of a triangle is really the height.
• To find the height, you drop a perpendicular line
from a vertex to the opposite side of a triangle.
• All 3 altitudes intersect at the point of
concurrency called the orthocenter.
