2
Title Synthesis of methyl salycilate
  • PURPOSESynthesize the wintergreen ester methyl
    salicylate.

3
Performing Tests
  • Spot plates will be used.
  • A reference, control, tap water and pool water
samples will be tested for the presence each ion.
  • There should be 4 data tables, one for each ion
    being tested for.
  • Note these results are qualitative because no
numbers are involved in the observations.
  • Basically you will see the positive result or
you wont. There will be variations in intensity
    however.

4
Cleaning Spot Plates
  • Take a piece of filter pap.

6
Using filter paper and funnel
  • Fold in half once more.

7
Using filter paper and funnel
  • Peel back ONE of the folds.

8
Using filter paper and funnel
  • Place filter paper in funnel.
  • Use water bottle to wet the paper to keep it in
    place.
  • Squeeze any air bubbles out that will prevent
    flow.

9
Performing the Tyndall Test
  • Place beaker in the very back of the Tyndall Box.

10
Performing the Tyndall Test
  • Place finger on laser button, but do not press.

11
Performing the Tyndall Test
  • Look at beaker, now press button for ONE second.
  • Colloid Solution

12
Mixtures LabQuestions(write down the questions)
  • 1 - Before filtering, which mixtures were
    solution, suspension or colloid?
  • 2 - After filtering, which mixtures were
    solution, suspension or colloid?
  • 3 - What is the Tyndall test? Which two types of
mixtures is it useful to distinguish between?
  • 4 - Which liquid mixture can you identify at a
    distance?
  • 5 - Does filtering with the filter paper change a
    colloid to a solution?
