  • Referring to definite work
  • And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and
    teachers. Ephesians 411
  • On the next day we who were Paul's companions
departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the
house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of
the seven, and stayed with him. Acts 218

3
Use of the Term
  • Meaningproclaimer of good news.
  • Timothy urged to do the work of an Evangelist

afflictions, do the work of an evangelist,
fulfill your ministry. 2 Timothy 45

The Work of an Evangelist
  • The work of Philip
  • Proclaiming Christ
  • Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and
preached Christ to themThen Philip opened his
mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached
    Jesus to him. Acts 85,35
  • Attended by miracles to confirm the word
  • And the multitudes with one accord heeded the
things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the
    miracles which he did.Acts 86

5
Work of an Evangelist
  • Preached wherever the opportunity afforded.
  • But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing
through, he preached in all the cities till he
    came to Caesarea. Acts 840

6
Work of an Evangelist
  • Baptizing those who believed.
  • But when they believed Philip as he preached the
things concerning the kingdom of God and the name
of Jesus Christ, both men and women were
    baptized. Acts 812
  • So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And
both Philip and the eunuch went down into the
    water, and he baptized him.
    Acts 838

7
Work of an Evangelist
  • Reprove, Rebuke, Exhort.
  • All three must be done
  • I charge you therefore before God and the Lord
Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the
dead at His appearing and His kingdom Preach the
word! Be ready in season and out of season.
Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering
    and teaching. 2
    Timothy 41,2

8
Work of an Evangelist
  • Complete organization of congregations
  • For this reason I left you in Crete, that you
should set in order the things that are lacking,
and appoint elders in every city as I commanded
    you. Titus 15

9
Work of an Evangelist
  • Indoctrinate the Church
  • Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole
households, teaching things which they ought not,
for the sake of dishonest gain. One of them, a
prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always
liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons. This
testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply,
that they may be sound in the faith.
    Titus 111-13

10
Work of an Evangelist
  • Perpetuate the Gospel by committing it unto
others who will faithfully teach it.
  • And the things that you have heard from me among
many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who
will be able to teach others also.
    2 Timothy 22

11
Work of an Evangelist
  • Give his time fully to the Lords work
  • Till I come, give attention to reading, to
exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift
that is in you, which was given to you by
prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the
eldership. Meditate on these things give
yourself entirely to them, that your progress may
be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to
the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this
you will save both yourself and those who hear
    you. 1 Timothy
    413-16

12
Work of an Evangelist
  • Give his time fully to the Lords work
  • And they will turn their ears away from the
truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be
watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do
the work of an evangelist, fulfill your
    ministry. 2
    Timothy 44,5

13
Work of an Evangelist
  • Warn against the dangers of apostasy.
  • Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter
times some will depart from the faith, giving
heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of
demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their
own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding
to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods
which God created to be received with
thanksgiving by those who believe and know the
    truth. 1 Timothy
    41-3

14
Work of an Evangelist
  • Protect the church from false teachers.
  • As I urged you when I went into
Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge
some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give
heed to fables and endless genealogies, which
cause disputes rather than godly edification
    which is in faith.
    1 Timothy 13,4

15
Work of an Evangelist
  • Assist in building up local churches.
  • Timothy tarried at Ephesus
  • To Timothy, a true son in the faith Grace,
mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus
Christ our Lord. As I urged you when I went into
    Macedonia--remain in Ephesus...
    1 Timothy 12,3

    you. Titus 15
