Investigating Electric Charges
  • One of the most common effects of static
electricity occurs when you comb your hair on a
day when the air is very dry. Your hair stands on
end, and there may be a crackling noise.
  • Another example of static electricity is when
clothes cling together in the dryer.

3
Law of Static Electricity
  • The law states that
  • Like charges repel (push away from each other) ?
    - and - , OR and .
  • Unlike charges attract (move towards each other)
    ? and -, OR and .
  • A charged object will attract a neutral object ?
    - and neutral, OR and neutral.

4
Three Ways of Charging Objects Statically
  • Friction
  • rubbing two different substances together.
  • - Results in opposite charges on the two
substances/objects one ends up with a positive
charge the other ends up with a negative charge.

Ways to charge objects
  • 2. Conduction
  • - also referred to as contact and involves
touching a neutral object with a charged one.
  • -results in the same charge being left on the
neutral object as was on the original charged
    object.

Ways to charge objects
  • 3. Induction involves a two step process.
  • i) a charged object is brought close to but not
    touching a neutral object
  • ii) the neutral object is then grounded
  • -the grounding is then removed and then the
    charged object is removed.
  • - results in the opposite charge being left on
the neutral object as compared to the original
    charged object.
