  • Modern models of discipleship
  • 1. Disciples are learners the word disciple
comes from the verb to learn. BUT the Greek term
mathetes is used in scripture in a different way
    (more like follower.)
  • 2. Disciples are committed believers
  • 3. Disciples are ministers
  • 4. Disciples are converts discipleship comes
  • later
  • 5. Disciples are converts who are in the process
  • of discipleship
  • MJ Wilkins, Following the master a Biblical
    Theology of Discipleship, Zondervan

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to
the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
When they saw him, they worshipped him but some
doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given
to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptising them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.
6
Jesus did not primarily command His disciples to
go, he commanded them to make disciples. But
since he now commands them to make disciples of
all nations , they will have to go to the
nations as a necessary condition of doing the
primary command. Chris Wright. The Mission of
God,p35.

but whoever obeys his word, truly in this
person the love of God has reached perfection.
By this we may be sure that we are in him,
whoever says I abide in him ought to walk just
as he walked. 1 John 2
v5-6
9
a disciple is someone who has decided to be
with another person, under appropriate conditions,
in order to be capable of doing what that person
does or to become what that person is. Dallas
Willard.

Where and how have you grown most in your faith?
11
A Theology of discipleship ? Disciple used 261
times in NT, 28 times in Acts Foundations in
5thC BC One who engages in learning through
instruction from another- pupil/apprentice. Not
usually singular. Not used in rest of NT. Why?
Not use rabbi What is Pauls language for
discipleship?
12
? Learner/apprentice Early on it was used for a
person who was a learner/apprentice eg in
dancing, wrestling, music, astronomy, writing,
hunting, medicine. The learner was acquiring
knowledge or skill from an expert. ?
Pupil/academician It then transitioned from
learner to pupil embracing the concept not just
of learning but also of commitment to a great
teacher/master. Eg disciples of Pythagoras or
Socrates were not just acquiring skills they
were committed to their master. It was more than
just education. ? Disciple/adherent. Herodotus
uses it to indicate a person who made a
significant, personal, life commitment. You learn
about the practices, and you live them out

We can be like him now 1 Thess 1 v6-8 Will be
like him 1 John 3v1-3 We are being made like
him 2 Cor 3v17-18, Gal 4v19 The goal is to
become Christ like We also do this for the sake
of others. Not necessarily do everything he did
but I am learning to live in the manner that he
did in all I do.
