Title: Going Digital

Going Digital
  • Advantages v. Disadvantages

Here are some advantages to going digital (there
may be others)
  1. No more film
  2. No running out of film
  3. No more processing costs you dont have to
have your photos printed output them on disk!
  4. See the photos right away LCD screens
  5. Re-shoot if someone steps into your picture
  6. Control (crop, rotate, remove spots or people,
    fix color, etc.)

Here are some advantages to going digital (there
may be others)
  1. Getting out of the dark room (you can set up your
computer and edit pics during the day and you can
let others see your handy work or even watch tv
    while you are doing it!)
  2. Everyone can see it (e mail)
  3. It will last forever (negatives and prints fade,
if carefully stored digital images will last
  4. Environmentally safe (no processing chemicals,
    plastic container to recycle)
  5. ITS FUN!

Why disadvantages?
  • Digital photography is still not perfect
  • We are paying for the manufacturers research and
    development costs

Here are some disadvantages to going digital
(there may be others)
  1. Image quality (the amount of info that can be
contained on a piece of film is ten fold of a
    typical digital camera)
  2. Limited resolution (if blowing up to be a
poster..you better use film because most of us
    have mid range digital cameras)
  3. Its expensive!!
  4. Equipment upgrades
  5. Digital cameras are sensitive to light so if
taking a pic inside, even if you use a flash, you
need to have additional lighting or just settle
    for darker images
  6. Noise (look in the dark areas of the image..its
like static on a TV and will show up as red or

Here are some disadvantages to going digital
(there may be others)
  • Pixelation (when you enlarge a pics you will see
little squares in the image because the pics do
not contain enough memory to properly display the
image at the size you want
  • Stair stepping (a result of low resolution and
    occurs in a diagonal like a stair..happens a lot
    with round objects)
  • Color distortions
  • Sleep mode (if the camera is not used for a few
minutes it will go into sleep mode or turn
    off..you might miss a shot!)
  • Learning curve (not to take pics but to learn how
to get the pics out and onto the computer and to
figure out how to get a great print!)
