The Second Italian War of Unification (1859)
  • Kingdom of Sardinia Piedmont now leads the
    unification movement
  • Count Camilo di Cavour prime minister of
    Sardinia in 1852 (Worked for Victor Emanuel II)
  • Realizing that defeating the Austrians was
    impossible without allies he won the favor of the
    Napoleon III by assisting France in the Crimean
    War in 1855.

  • In July of 1858 Cavour and Napoleon III reached
    an agreement on Italian unification
  • France would assist Sardinia in return for the
    return of 2 provinces (Nice and Savoy)
  • The Austrians were defeatedwith much
    bloodshedby the combined French and Sardinian
    forces

    Austrians without Sardinian consent (Why?)
