One man decided to make a change
  • Martin Luther
  • He wrote 95 Theses
  • Formal statements, attacking indulgences
  • On October 31, 1517 he posted these statements
    on the door of the castle church
  • This became known as the Protestant Reformation

  • 1. The Churchs interpretation of the Bible was

  • 2. Christians needed faith AND good works for
    salvation
  • 3. The Bible and Church tradition were equally
    powerful authorities for guiding Christian life
  • 4. Indulgences were valid expressions of faith
    but the false selling of indulgences were banned
