Title: Virtual Electronic Connectivity in the Future

1
Virtual Electronic Connectivity in the Future
  • What will it look like?

Bill Bartling Adjunct Professor of Geology San
Diego State University
2
A Question of Perspective High Tech Baby Boomers
  • We had it all
  • Talking movies transmitted magically through the
    air
  • Innovative transportation
  • Personal radios we made at home
  • Talk to anyone, anywhere in the world with a few
    turns of a dial

3
All the big problems were solved
  • Supercomputing
  • a world market for maybe 5 computers
  • Cracked the atom
  • Sputnik pinging happily away
  • Antibiotics
  • closing the door on infectious disease
  • Men in space

4
Fast Forward 50 years to Generation Y
  • The Future has arrived
  • Playing now in their bedrooms
  • Fast processing, big memory, extraordinary
    graphics
  • Usage skills are analogous to the BBs tuning a
    transistor radio
  • Multi-tasking a way of life
  • Virtual networks of friends and study pals
  • Expert at long-range collaborative interactions
  • Active in programming and user groups
  • Involved, engaged, enthralled, excited
  • Renaissance techies
  • Its become cool to be a nerd

5
Their Future Holds Vastly Different Challenges
  • The more efficient our technology, the more
    energy we consume.
  • The cost of energy is dominated by the cost of
    extraction and refinement
  • The Flat World enables and welcomes new knowledge
industry economies connected via virtual networks

6
But The Tools Are In The Schools So They Come
Ready To Play
  • Real time sensornets
  • Advanced computing
  • Ubiquitous visualization
  • Collaborative systems
  • Remote access
  • Information, skill and knowledge rich

7
With A New Generation of Communication Systems
  • multifunction, 4G phones
  • Heads up retinal scanners
  • RazrWire Bluetooth
  • Wearable internet devices
  • And of course the iPod
  • We went to the technology they take it with

8
And An Internet Culture
  • Business is global, national identities are
transparent and cultural and political borders
    are breached
  • A microsecond is a long time to wait
  • Parallel minds work in multiple simultaneous

to multi-media to webcams we live in the
    media, we dont watch it
  • The world is small everything is connected
easy time travel from one reality to another
  • A great trust in the Internet and by extension,
in people they have never met (wiki, open source)
  • Sharing in Virtual Societies (BLOGS etc)
  • Google the world and discover anything on your
    own
  • Knowledge is free
  • A new view of the workday and workplace where
ever you are, whenever you need to and with
    whomever you want to
  • Energy is required to power this, and it is
    ubiquitous and sufficient

9
For a New Paradigm of Work Meetings at 11
  • The always on, wireless, electronic communication
    generation
  • Virtual meetings, virtual presence
  • Sensornets and other real time data streams
  • Broadband connectivity and collaboration
    wherever you are

10
Based on Important Foundations of Change
  • The next generation of communication depends on
  • Connectivity
  • IPv6 expansion of the network addresses (1500 per
    m2), capability and security
  • Reach
  • New innovative, wide coverage and inexpensive
    wireless networking
  • Bandwidth
  • 4G wireless 3G passed by

NTT DoCoMo Achieves World's First 2.5Gbps Packet
Transmission in 4G Field Experiment
11
Wireless Generations On The Path To 4G
12
To Be Ready For The Brave New Unwired World
  • Always-on, wired professionals
  • Ubiquitous worn internet devices
  • Broad wireless bandwidth
  • Virtual connectivity
  • Never more than a button away from your data or
    your collaborators
