Binary Fission
  • Involves a one celled organism.
  • 1 parent cell 2 new daughter cells.
  • The cells become an exact replication of each
    other.

Sexual Reproduction in Plants
Angiosperms and Gymnosperms reproduce sexually by

Budding
  • This is when a child grows out of the parent.
  • The child is smaller than the parent
  • Genetically identical
  • The parent and child could stay connected and
    form a colony, or separate.

Spores
  • Spores (single celled structures) contain
    genetically identical material to that of their
    parents
  • Examples are
  • bread mold, mushrooms, mosses and ferns.

Sexual Reproduction in Plants
Although some plants (ferns and mosses) reproduce
ASEXUALLY through spores, a lot of the
Angiosperms (flowering plants) and Gymnosperms
(cone-bearing plants) produce SEXUALLY

  • With a partner
  • Take a tulip
  • Using a scalpel, cut the tulip exactly in half
    without destroying it
  • Using the tools in your kit, see if you can
    identify these structures (also pg 33 of
    textbook)
  • Ovary
  • Pistil
  • Stamen
  • Anther/Filament
  • Petal
  • Stigma
  • On blank paper, complete a drawing (at least
    15cm) of your tulip dissection
  • Points awarded for neatness, quality, and
    labeling of all structures
  • Define the following on the back of your page
  • Zygote, Pistil, Stamen, Ovule, Pollen Tube,
    Embryo, Cotyledons
