Inffluence of pH value on adsorption efficiency
of heavy metals from water Mina Jandric

Introduction
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • Rapidly progress of industry increased
    environmental pollution
  • Heavy metals in water and wasterwater-big
concern and danger for living world

4
Characteristics of heavy metals
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • Most common heavy metals in water Zn, Cu, Hg,
    Ni, Cd, Pb, Cr...
  • - Heavy metals 1. are toxic
  • 2. are non biodegradable
  • 3. have ability to accumulate in tissues

5
Removal of heavy metals from water
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • - Different methods for removal of heavy metals
    chemical precipitation, activated carbon
    adsorption, ionexchange, electrochemical methods,
    etc.
  • - Today, the most researched method is
biosorption by the means of natural materials ie
    biomass.

6
Biosorption
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • - Heavy metal ions accumulate on surface area
    between solution and biosorbent particles
  • - Biosorbents have active sites on the surface,
that are different functional groups (hydroxyl,
    carboxyl...)

7
Inffluence of pH value
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • Biosorption depends on biosorbent and adsorbate
types, contact time of biosorbent and adsorbate
    solution, temperature, ionic strenght of
    solution, pH value, etc.
  • pH value affects heavy metal ions and functional
    groups of active sites.
  • Removal of copper ions by sugar beet shreds as
adsorbent, at different pH values of solution, is
    investigated .
  • Buffer solutions and hydroxides (NaOH and NH4OH)
were used for adjustment of pH values.

8
Inffluence of pH value
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • -Sugar beet shred fraction is 224-400µm
  • -The copper concentration in the solution is
    50mg/l
  • -pH value is determine before the addition of
    adsorbent
  • -Time of the adsorption is 90 minutes.
  • -The adsorbent is separated by filtration (filter
    paper Macherey-Nagel 651/120)
  • -The copper concentration in solutions is
    determined by complexometric titration, before
    and after adsorption.

Conclusion
.
1st Students Meeting
Waterfriend
.
  • Many factors influence process of adsorption.
Adsorption efficiency also depends on the type of
substance which is used for adjustment of pH
value. Before some biosorbent is applied into the
practice, it is important to determine in detail
the working conditions in laboratory scale.
