  • Definition A prepositional phrase is a group of
    words that begins with a preposition and ends
    with a noun or pronoun
  • Examples by the ocean near the window over the
    cabinet with us under the bed

  • When a prepositional phrase serves as an
    adjective, its called an adjectival phrase
  • Example The manager with the pink slips
    terrorized the employees

  • When a prepositional phrase modifies a verb, an
    adjective or an adverb, it is called an adverbial
    phrase. Makes sense, no?

Appositives Non Essential Information
  • An appositive is a noun or a pronoun that renames
    another noun or pronoun. Appositives are placed
    directly after the noun or pronoun they identify.
    This is also called non-essential information.
  • Example Spot, a cat, should understand my moods.
  • She, my sister, is always late.

  • A verbal is a verb form used as another part of
    speech. Come in three varieties
  • Participles function as adjectives
  • Gerunds function as nouns
  • Infinitives function as nouns, adjectives, or
    adverbs.

  • A participle is a form of verb that functions as
    an adjective.
  • Present participles end in ing (jumping,
    burning, speaking).
  • Past participles end in ed, -t, or en (jumped,
    burnt, spoken).
  • Example The howling children are disturbing the
    neighbors.

  • Definition a gerund is a form of a verb used as
    a noun.
  • Remember this when hunting for gerunds
  • Gerunds always end in ing.
  • Gerunds always act as nouns.
