Reading on P71
  • 1. How does Portia stop Shylock from cutting
    Antonios flesh?
  • Portia allows Shylock to take exactly one
pound of flesh from Antonio, no more, no less.
She also tells Shylock that he must not let one
drop of his blood fall. So Shylock gives in.

4
  • 2. What does Portia say when Shylock finally
agrees to take three times more than Antonio
    borrowed from him?
  • She says that Shylock must give half of
his money to Antonio and the other half to the
city of Venice according to the law.

5
3. What if the result of the trial? Does the
story have a happy ending? Antonio is
saved. Shylock gets punished. The story has a
happy ending.
  • 4. What happened to Shylock?
  • He had to give half of his money to the
city of Venice and promised to leave the other
half of his money upon his death to his daughter
    and her husband.

Sample play
K King S Soldier M1 Mother
of the baby M2 Mother whose baby has died
  • S Silence in the courtroom. Heres the King.
  • K Welcome to the court. Please be seated.
    Whats the problem?

9
  • S The problem is between these two women.
Each of them had a baby. Yesterday, one of the
mothers found her baby dead in her bed beside
    her.
  • K So what is the problem?
  • M2 She says that my baby is hers. She says I
    changed the babies,

10
  • but it isnt true.
  • K What has happened?
  • M1 It is not my baby. When I looked at the
dead baby, I knew it wasnt mine. She has changed
the babies, when she found out hers had died.
  • M2 Thats ridiculous! I can understand that
    you must feel

11
  • terrible that your baby has died, but
    you cant claim mine.
  • M1 It isnt yours. Its mine. You stole my
    baby. That baby is mine.
  • K Stop, stop, stop. I dont want any
quarreling in my court. Whose baby it is?

12
  • M2 It is my baby. Her baby died, and in her
grief she now wants me to give her my baby.
  • M1 No. It is my baby. Her baby died during
the night. When she found out in the morning, she
exchanged our babies. She put the dead baby in my
bed and took my baby away.

13
  • M2 Thats ridiculous. You have too much
    fantasy. The baby is mine.
  • K Stop, please.
  • M2 Please, good king, pass judgemnet. I have
only come to claim what is mine by law.
  • K M1, is there any way to prove that the
baby is yours. Does it have

14
  • any special marks? What about the
    colour of its eyes.
  • M1 No. There isnt any way in which I can
prove that the baby is mine. But I know it with
all my heart that this little baby is mine.
  • M2 There, you see. The baby is mine.

15
  • K OK. I think there is only one solution. We
have two mothers who each claim that the baby is
theirs. If one takes the baby, then the other is
unhappy. If the other takes the baby, the first
will feel injustice is done. I see only one way
    out of this.

16
  • M1 Please, good king. I trust your judgement
    will be wise.
  • K My judgement is that we cut the baby in
halves. Then each mother can take half of the
baby. (to the soldier) Please give me your sword,
so that I can cut the baby in two pieces.

17
  • M2 Yes. You are such a wise King. Lets cut
the baby in two pieces, and then our argument
    will be settled.
  • M1 Oh no, please do not let such a thing
happen. If this is the only way, then please let
her have the baby. I could not bear to see the
baby die in such a way.

18
  • M2 Fine. If you dont want your part, I will
take the whole baby back home. Thank you, Oh wise
    King, for your judgement.
  • K Wait a moment. You have just given
yourself away. My proposal was but a test. I can
now see that she (pointing at M1) has to be the
    real mother.

19
  • M2 Why? Whats wrong.
  • K No real mother could ever allow her baby
to be killed. You immediately agreed to cutting
the baby in pieces to get your part. But she
tried to save the babys life, even if that meant
she had to give it away. She could only be so

20
  • generous because she really cares for
the baby. So she is the real mother, and you are
    not.
  • M1 Thank you, Oh wise King. I knew that
    justice would prevail.
  • M2 OK. Here it is. Farewell.
  • K Hold on! Where are you going? You cannot
    escape your

21
  • punishment. You not only stole a baby,
you wanted to have it killed as well. Instead,
    you shall be killed.
  • M1 Please, wise King. Have mercy on her. I
can understand her grief. When she acted, she was
out of her mind from grief. Spare her. Her loss
    is already greater than

22
  • anyone could bear. Losing her baby is the
worst thing that can happen to a mother.
  • K OK. You are right. This case is closed.

Romeo in the play Romeo and Juliet.

26
  • Portia plays double roles, both as the wife
of Bassanio and the lawyer, in the play The
    Merchant of Venice.
  • Cordelia plays the role of Lears youngest
daughter in the play King Lear.

27
  • 2. According to the writer, each of them
represents a different quality of character.
Which quality marks each of the three women
    characters in the text?
  • Juliet represents women of passion and
    imagination.

  • 4. Why can we call Juliet brave in her love

31
  • 6. In what way can you compare King Lears
test with the game of the gold, silver and iron
    boxes of Portias father?
  • King Lears test and the game of the gold,
silver and iron boxes are similar because the
gold and silver boxes are only beautiful at the
    surface, just like

32
  • the elder daughters words are very beautiful
but their hearts are empty. Cordelia answer is
like the outside of the iron box not very
special and no decorations, but the most true of
    all.
