1
What Is The Big Deal About Water?
  • Welcome !!
  • Disclaimer This Presenter Of This Presentation
Has Been Trained To Use PPG Paint. Therefore,
The Presentation Is Bases On Many PPG Facts.
Other Paint Manufactures May Vary In
    Recommendations.

Water discussion
3
  • Many Base Coat Do Not Have Catalyst
  • Catalyzed Products Have Most Of The Isocyanides
  • Why Did They Start With Base Coat.?

4
  • Its All About VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)

5
  • VOCs Are The Solvents That Pollute The Air
  • Many Base Coat Are Reduced 100 With Solvents.
  • This Means That Half Of The Base Coat Is Solvent
Without What Was Is Already In The Paint.

6
  • What Happens To All Of The Solvents In Base Coat?

7
  • It Evaporates Into The Air
  • Thats The Big Deal
  • Primers and Clears Are High Solids Less
Evaporation More Stays On The Painted Surface.

19
Solvent vs. Water
  • Waterborne has one solvent that evaporates at the
    same rate with air flow
  • The latex fingers cling together as the water
    is extracted
  • As a result
  • Less color shift
  • Metallics dont sink or orientate incorrectly
  • Reduced blotchiness

22
Lab work, pre discussion
  • What do you want to see in the booth?
  • How long to powder nib your Base?
  • How long to sand your base?
  • How long to tape for two tone?

23
What if ???
  • What if you could remove 1/3 of the color match
    variables in your shop?

24
  • Mastering the MIXING ROOM
  • Take a little time now to save a lot of time
    later
  • Publish date Oct 1, 2008By Al Thomas

25
  • MIXING The mixing of a formula should be done
with care. Many paint manufacturers recommend
that toners be agitated for 30 minutes at the
beginning of the day and three other times per
day for 15 minutes each. There are some coatings
    that should not be overmixed.
  • Some paint manufacturers recommend that new
toners be placed in a shaker for as much as 30
minutes before attaching an agitation lid and
placing it on the mixing bank.

26
  • TONER BANK Toners should all be turning when
being agitated. Some mixing machines have a
yellow plastic piece that bounces as the paddle
turns in the toner can, making it easy to see
when it is not turning. Others must be checked
more closely. Dented cans or cans whose lids
don't fit properly may keep the toner paddle from
    mixing.

27
  • CORRUPT BANK A corrupt bank occurs when a toner
is poured off without being agitated or before it
is in correct suspension. If a toner is poured
off in this state, that formula mix won't match.
But more importantly, the colors mixed with that
corrupt toner are not likely to match either.

28
  • CORRUPT BANK This mishap can occur without being
noticed. Even if the painter suspects a corrupt
bank, finding the bad toner or toners is
difficult. You can see this is a difficult and
tedious process, but it can be avoided by proper
    agitation.

29
What if ??
  • You never had to shake or agitate paint again!

30
What does stirring and shaking paint cost?
  • ____ minutes to stir before pouring
  • ____ Minutes waiting for new toner
  • ____ minutes per job
  • ____ Jobs per week
  • Lean manufacturing principles teach us about
    removing waste
  • Extra time in process waste

31
Effects of Waste
  • Increased cycle time
  • Increased cost, labor and utilities
  • Decreased Customer satisfaction (CSI)
  • Decreased profit
  • Lower insurance satisfaction (Less Work)

32

    with waterborne basecoat
  • General Guidelines
  • 1.2 to 1.4 Fluid Tip recommendation
  • Must be dedicated for water
  • Must have corrosion resistant components
  • For a complete guide reference the gun set up
    chart. Part DOX440

40
Drying Equipment
  • Waterborne requires good air flow to expedite the
evaporation of the water from the basecoat
  • While temperature and humidity play a roll in the
drying of EHP, increasing the feet per minute of
air passing over the surface is key for excellent
    productivity
  • Generally, 200 FPM or greater will lead to
    excellent results

41

Cleaning Equipment
  • Gun cleaner makers, such as Drester and Herkules,
offer systems that integrate the use of T499 or
    P872-1000 Flocculating Powder
  • T499 or P872-1000 separates out the solids
allowing the water to be re-used efficiently,
minimizing waterborne waste It is possible to
reuse the filtrate from the process at least ten
    times before cleaning properties diminish

47
Waste Disposal
  • The solid sludge collected from the treatment
process is classified as Controlled Waste and
should be disposed of in accordance with local
    regulations

48
Equipment costs
  • Gun washer, 1,500 - 3,500
  • Blowers 100. - 350.
  • 2 blowers on stand 700.

49
Marketing Green
50
Marketing Green
  • Market differentiation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Students Search Green

51
The Environment
  • Benefits to the air we breathe
  • For a shop that mixes an average of 1 gallon
of basecoat per week, the move to waterborne
saves over 300 lbs of VOC annually
  • thats the equivalent of eliminating the
emissions of more than 1250 cars per year
  • Best of all - Going Green with Envirobase HP
or Aquabase plus doesnt require sacrifice in
    performance or quality

52
Can I Market Water?
  • The Green Trend Is Alive and growing.
  • Think it doesnt influence the general publics
buying habits??? JD Power and Associates says
it does for over 63 of all consumers over the
    age of 21.
  • Insurance companies like sending their insured to
    Green shops.
