2
What is Abortion?
  • Abortion is the intentional termination of a
    pregnancy after conception

3
Types of Abortions
  • First trimester
  • Methotrexate Misoprostol
  • Mifepristone Misoprostol
  • Suction Aspiration
  • Second trimester
  • Dilation Curettage
  • Dilation Evacuation
  • Induction Abortion
  • Third trimester
  • Induction abortion
  • Dilation and extraction

4
First Trimester
  • Methotrexate Misoprostol
  • Methotrexate is a chemical taken orally or by
injection that causes the placenta to break away
from the wall. Then misoprostol is taken orally
which causes contractions and leads to the
    expulsion of the placenta.
  • Mifepristone Misoprostol (RU-486)
  • Mifepristone is a chemical like Methotrexate that
causes the placenta to break away from the wall
as well as contractions. Misoprostol given by
mouth causes more contractions leading to the
    expulsion of the placenta
  • Suction Aspirations
  • - This procedure involves the use of a specially
designed syringe to apply suction or a hollow
tube called a cannula. The cannula is passed
through the uterus and the tissue is removed
    from the uterus

Second Trimester
  • Dilation Curettage
  • This method uses a sharp instrument to remove the
developing fetus from the uterus. This type of
abortion is typically preformed in the Second
    trimester
  • Dilation Evacuation
  • This procedure uses a combination of suction
aspiration, dilation and curettage , and the use
    of surgical tools.
  • Induction Abortion
  • This procedure uses a variety of medications and
procedures to prematurely start labor. The woman
goes through the whole process of labor before
the fetus is able to survive outside the womb.

Third Trimester
  • Induction Abortion
  • Dilation Extraction
  • A surgical procedure in which the baby is turned
around so it is feet first. Every part of the
baby is then pulled out except for the head, and
an incision is made in the skull and the brain is
    suctioned out.
