Title: Is Doctrine Really Important ?

1
Is Doctrine Really Important ?
2
Doctrine is Boring,
Unimportant Divisive
217 Denominations
35, 000 Independent Churches
3
I John 2 19 They went out from us, but they
were not really of us for if they had been of
us, they would have remained with us but they
went out, so that it would be shown that they all
are not of us.

What is doctrine ? Websters definition
Doctrine Instruction, teaching Dogma
Established opinion Strongs Lexicon
Didaskalia Doctrine , teaching
5
Christians must be dogmatic about some things.
I Timothy 63-4a If anyone advocates a different
doctrine and does not agree with sound words,
those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the
doctrine conforming to godliness, 4 he is
??conceited and understands nothing ...
6
Lets take a few minutes to see six things the
scriptures say about doctrine. I. The
source of Christs teaching, of His
doctrine, is God.
7
John 7 15-17 The Jews then were astonished,
saying, How has this man become learned, having
never been educated? 16 So Jesus answered them
and said, My teaching is not Mine, but His who
sent Me. 17 If anyone is willing to do His will,
he will know of the teaching, whether it is of
God or whether I speak from Myself.
8
II. Doctrine is beneficial.
II Timothy 3 13-17 But evil men and
impostors will proceed from bad to worse,
deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however,
continue in the things you have learned and
become convinced of, knowing from whom you have
learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have
known
9
II Timothy 3 13-17 ... continued the sacred
writings which are able to give you the wisdom
that leads to salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God
and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness 17 so
that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for
every good work.
10
Christianity is a religion of knowledge.
Romans 10 17 So faith comes from
hearing, and hearing by the word of
Christ.
11
III. The church in the New Testament
was devoted to the Apostles
doctrine. (
Every Day )
12
Acts 2 41-42 So then, those who had received
his word were baptized and that day there were
added about three thousand souls. 42 They were
continually devoting themselves to the Apostles
teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and to prayer.
13
I Peter 2 2-3 Like newborn babies, long for the
pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow
in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the
kindness of the Lord.
14
IV. Doctrine establishes
the purpose of the ministry of the
church and each individual
member thereof.
15
V. We must avoid those
who misuse doctrine to cause division.

16
Romans 16 17 Now I urge you, brethren, keep
your eye on those who cause dissensions and
hindrances contrary to the teaching which you
learned, and turn away from them.
17
II John 9-11 Anyone who goes too far and does
not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not
have God the one who abides in the teaching, he
has both the Father and the Son.
18
II John 9-11 ... continued 10  If anyone
comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do
not receive him into your house, and do not give
him a greeting 11 for the one who gives him a
greeting participates in his evil deeds.
19
VI. Servants of God / Christ
must attend to doctrine.
20
I Timothy 4 13 Until I come, give attention to
the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation
and teaching. ( didaskalia doctrine )
Reading ... Learn Gods will Exhortation
... Encourage, admonish Teaching ... Instruct
in doctrine
21
I Timothy 4 16 Pay close attention to yourself
and to your teaching persevere in these things,
for as you do this you will ensure salvation both
for yourself and for those who hear you.
22
II Timothy 4 1-4   I solemnly charge you in
the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is
to judge the living and the dead, and by His
appearing and His kingdom 2 preach the word be
ready in season and out of season reprove,
rebuke, exhort, with great patience and
instruction.
23
II Timothy 4 1-4 ... continued 3 For the time
will come when they will not endure sound
doctrine but wanting to have their ears tickled,
they will accumulate for themselves teachers in
accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn
away their ears from the truth and will turn
aside to myths.
24
Titus 1 5-9 For this reason I left you in
Crete, that you would set in order what remains
and appoint elders in every city as I directed
you, 6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the
husband of one wife, having children who believe,
25
Titus 1 5-9 ... continued not accused of
dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must
be above reproach as Gods steward, not
self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to
wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8
but hospitable,
26
Titus 1 5-9 ... continued loving what is
good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9
holding fast the faithful word which is in
accordance with the teaching, so that he will be
able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to
refute those who contradict.
27
Clearly the scriptures emphasize the importance
of the doctrine of Christ. 1. It
communicates salvation to man. 2.
It communicates Gods will to man.
28
This lesson has observed six of the many ways
scripture endorses doctrine. 1 .. Jesus received
the doctrine from God. 2 .. Doctrine is of great
value to Christians. 3 .. N.T. Christians were
dedicated to doctrine. 4 .. Doctrine directs
everything we do for God. 5 .. We must avoid
advocates of strange doc. 6 .. Christians must
learn and teach doctrine.
29
There are only two kinds of doctrine. ( Some
things are black and white ) 1. True ...
The doctrine of Christ
( I Tim. 6 3-5 ) 2.
False ... The doctrine of demons
( I Tim. 4 1-3 )
3. There is no third option or middle ground.
30
Not every honest error will condemn a
Christian, but some will so we must learn them.
No one knows all and most dont
understand as much as we think we do.
31
Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son
of God ? Do you believe He died as a
sacrifice for the sins of others and rose again ?
32
Have you surrendered your life in obedience to
His gospel ?
