Environmental Education in Schools
  • Taught as disintegrated topics in other subjects
    e.g. biology, geography, chemistry and physics.
  • Limited linkage of topics taught and the meaning
    of environmental education to students.
  • Uncoordinated skills learnt by students in terms
    of environmental conservation.

Intended skills students need to learn
  • Cognitive important knowledge and theories in
    relation to destruction of environment and
    biodiversity, conservation processes and
    sustainability.
  • Awareness building using local environment and
    looking for possible problem solving solutions
  • Hands on activities use of outdoor and real
    life examples.

Pedagogical strategies used in schools
  • Use of teacher centered methods of teaching,
    dominated by lectures and writing notes.
  • Little use of pictures and visual images of the
    environment before and after destruction, or
    conservation.
  • Outdoor activities are not considered as part of
    the learning process in teaching environmental
    education.

  • Little or no usage of technology in teaching
    environmental education for example use of
    computers, pre-prepared DVDs, digital cameras,
    or video recording facilities.
  • What is the best way to do this?

Methodology
  • Involved postgraduates (Masters Students) doing
    environmental education course.
  • Selected their own area of study for field work.
  • Collected data in relation to environmental
    destruction air pollution, water pollution and
    land pollution.

  • Well informed data was collected as summarized
    here.
  • Use of digital cameras and computers.
  • However, possible multimedia materials were not
    used.
  • What could be the best multimedia to be used?

  • Change of teaching and learning process from
    teacher centered to learner centered.
  • Participatory process of learning used.
  • Outdoor activities and hands on used.
  • Inclusion of technology digital cameras and
    computers.
