  • An Introduction to -
  • New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology
    (NZIHT)
  • NZIHT is currently the largest provider of civil
engineering, technical and skills training in New
    Zealand.
  • It is an independent company, 100 owned by the
Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki
(WITT), a NZ government tertiary organisation.
  • NZIHT has experience in delivering courses
throughout New Zealand, as well as the South

  • Courses and programmes delivered by NZIHT
    include
  • NZIHT offers a range of specialist short courses,
    through to internationally recognised
    qualifications. These include
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Highways), a
    level 7 qualification
  • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 4 to 6
    qualification)
  • Certificate in Engineering Technology (Level 4
    qualification)
  • National Certificate in Infrastructure Works
    (Level 2 qualification)
  • Most of these courses have content that must be
    done in New Zealand.

3
  • Courses that can be delivered in Indonesia
  • NZIHT delivers a wide range of specialist short
courses of one and two day duration. Subjects
are specifically for the civil industry and
    include

7
  • Who should attend?
  • The courses selected are suited to those with
some experience in civil construction, and
wishing to upgrade their skills and knowledge,
    including
  • Supervisors who manage on-site staff and oversee
    construction activities.
  • Project Engineers, Designers and Technicians
  • Project Managers, who have control of staff and
    need their instructions followed.
  • Managers, responsible for civil infrastructure
    works, both new and experienced

8
  • Course 1 - Leadership Training
  • This course is aimed at anybody who is in charge
of a work team of any size.
  • The course is high on involvement and equips the
participants to take the concepts into the
    workplace and use them.
  • It is delivered in an inductive (experiential)
format, which allows participants to be totally
involved in the learning process. Topics
    include
  • Improving Performance, Communication, The
    Leader/Manager Concept, Building and Maintaining
    Teams, Motivation, Conflict Management

9
  • Course 2 Project Managers Toolbox
  • Project management is the use of leadership,
    planning, scheduling and control techniques.
Being an effective project manager today, means
finding solutions to complex and multifunctional
    activities, and utilizing the necessary
leadership skills to influence others to get the
    job done.Topics include
  • Negotiation Skills
  • Leadership Team Skills
  • Time Management
  • 11 Rules for Project Management

10
  • Course 3 Supervisors Toolkit
  • Supervision is the use of leadership, to get the
work done, on behalf of your company in the
constraints of time, budget and quality and to
    the satisfaction of the client.
  • It also involves building your team, training and
developing its members so that they can achieve
the outcome even when you are not there.
  • This highly interactive course will address four
    essentials to the supervisor
  • - What you have to BE- What you have to KNOW-
What you have to DO- What you have to LEARN

11
  • Course 4 Geo-mechanics for NZ roads
  • This course draws together the necessary soil
    investigation and geotechnical procedures for
roading construction and maintenance. It provides
    an up-to-date overview of investigative
    techniques and analysis. Topics include
  • Geotechnical engineering and pavement design
  • Fundamental soil properties
  • Compaction
  • In-situ investigation and testing
  • Effects and control of water movement
  • Soil strength improvement

12
  • Course 5 Aggregates for Pavement Construction
  • This course identifies the properties and
characteristics of aggregates and systems for
quarrying, storage, selection and handling, so
that these properties are not altered and their
quality remains consistent until placement in the
    pavement. Topics include
  • Function of structural layers in a pavement
  • Selection of pavement aggregates - sealed and
    unsealed pavements
  • Role of clay minerals
  • Aggregate production and properties of the
    product
  • Storage, handling and compaction of aggregate for
    pavements
  • Use of marginal and low quality aggregates

13
  • Course 6 Quality Pavement Construction
  • This course provides an overview of the theory
and practice to assist team leaders and
    supervisors/forepersons to manage construction in
    the field.
  • There is an increasing need for contracting firms
to understand the issues involved with pavement
    construction, especially material compaction.
    Topics include
  • Excavation and identification of problem areas in
    subgrade
  • Treatment of poor subgrade areas to achieve
    strength requirements
  • Soil properties influencing compaction and
    Compaction assessment (in the field)
  • Compaction equipment - types and application
  • Spreading and placement of aggregate materials
  • Grading, trimming, shaping and compaction of
    final surface
  • Surface preparation

14
  • Course 7 Installation Maintenance of
    Roadside Drainage
  • Good drainage is one of the key factors in the
continuing performance of many civil engineering
    structures, including road pavements. Each
drainage system has its own particular
    installation and maintenance requirements,
whether undertaken by hand or machine, attention
to detail is important. Topics include
  • Pipe laying, trenching, bedding and backfilling
  • Types and functions of drainage systems
  • Culvert and pipe installation (site preparation,
trenching, laying and joining pipes, backfilling
    and testing)
  • Subsoil drainage systems
  • Maintenance procedure (blockages, breakages,
    inspection and repair)
  • Reinstating pavement after repairs
  • Replacement of damaged drainage systems

15
  • Course 8 Safety on Civil Worksites
  • This course outlines the principles of work site
safety, how to prepare a safety plan, recognise
potential hazards, locate, identify and isolate
services and manage equipment in order to
maintain a clean, safe, tidy working environment
at a work site. Topics include
  • Subcontractors' responsibilities
  • Hazard identification
  • Identifying site specific quality procedures
  • Essential maintenance and safety checks for tools
    and machinery
  • Safe operation in varying weather conditions
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Manual excavation
  • On-site communications

16
  • Course 9 Maintenance Safe Use of Small Plant
    and Machinery
  • The proper care and correct use of such small
plant enhances work practices and improves
    productivity. Small equipment can often
contribute to accidents so a thorough
understanding of their use is important.
  • A variety of equipment is demonstrated in this
course to illustrate key principles and safety
    procedures.
  • Power tools
  • Generators
  • Rollers and compaction plant
  • Screeds and other small machines
  • These are all basic equipment used in the
everyday operation of any roading or civil
    contracting company.
