Title: Do Now

1
Do Now Monday, October 28
  • In your own words, explain why YOU think we see
    different phases of the moon.
  • For full credit you must write at least 2
    complete sentences!

2
Phases, Eclipses, and Tides
  • CHAPTER 19
  • SECTION 2
  • MR. VAN ETTEN

3
Motions of the Moon
  • Open your book to page 646.
  • Read the first two paragraphs starting
  • with the purple T.
  • In your guided notes write down ANY two facts you
    find important from this reading.

4
Motions of the Moon
  • The moon revolves around the Earth and rotates on
    its own axis.
  • It takes about 27.3 days for one revolution!
  • The moon also rotates slowly around its axis
    every 27.3 days
  • This means a day and a year on the moon are
    the same!!

5
Quick Discovery!
  • Turn to page 646.
  • After completing the Discoveractivity, answer
the following question once more in your own
    notes!
  • From the point of view of someone on Earth, does
the moon seem to rotate? Explain your answer.

6
Motions of the Moon
  • The same side of the moon ALWAYS faces the Earth!
    near side
  • The far side of the moon ALWAYS faces AWAY from
    the Earth.
  • You never see it!

7
Phases of the Moon
  • At night, do you think the moon, by itself,
    produces the light you see?
  • The moon does not produce
  • its own light!
  • It reflects light from the sun.

8
Phases of the Moon
  • Phases the different shapes of the moon you see
    from Earth.
  • The moon goes through a whole set of phases about
    once a month.

9
What Causes the Phases?
  • Phases are caused by changes in the relative
positions of the moon, Earth and the sun.
  • The phases of the Moon you see depend on how much
of the sunlit side of the
  • moon faces Earth!
  • The half of the moon that faces Earth is not
always the half that is sunlit.

10
The Cycle of the Phases
  • Full Moon the entire side of the moon facing
    Earth is lit!
  • As the moon orbits you see
  • less and less of it until
  • New Moon the side of the moon facing Earth is
    NOT lit!

11
Checkpoint!
  1. How many days does it take the moon to revolve
once around the Earth? To rotate once on its
    axis?
  2. Since the moon does not produce its own light,
    how can you see it?

12
  • What does the phase of the moon you see from
    Earth depend on?
  • How many Earth days make a Moon day? A Moon
    year?
