The story so far
  • Spain under King Alfonso - notes pp.298-9
  • Republican Spain - read article on causes of war
    and summarise historiography
  • The outbreak of war - mind-mapping of long and
    short term causes
  • The course and nature of the war - copy timeline
p.300 and notes on nature of war pp.301-2. Add to
    both from article

Planning ahead
  • Monday - international dimension
  • Tuesday - reason for Nationalist victory
  • Thursday - Franco in power
  • Friday / Monday 18th - film

Recapping causes
  • Your thoughts from your mind-map?
  • Long term (gives background too) looking at each
  • Then short term (within format) and finally spark
    - so you are also telling coherent story
  • What about comparisons? See sheet

International dimension - how important is it in
the outcome?
  • What countries are we talking about?
  • France, UK, Italy, Germany, USSR
  • What were the aims and actions of each country?
Research one then we will feed back. Everyone
    read section B.
  • Pages 302-6
  • 1) Britain and France
  • 2) Germany
  • 3) Italy
  • 4) USSR

Reasons for Nationalist Victory
  • Greater unity - R-W groups bid for return to
    stability church powerful unifying influence
  • Disunity of Republicans - even before war many
    different groups with little sympathy
  • Paradoxically, it was the Right which was united
in a cause and the Left was defending an inept
    status quo. Wolfson
  • Greater supplies - Germany and Italy - greater
than USSR. Men, equipment, food, even USA
  • Non-intervention - lack of action
  • Experience - army tactics and supply. Soviet
technicians redressed balance only to certain
    extent. Francos command.
  • See sheet also. How would you approach an essay
on the outcome of the war?
