Mundi Technology found a laser manufacturer who
had a 120 Watt scribing laser used for cutting
and welding This laser was very fast because of
its high power, but was not suitable for the
beverage industry. Mundi Technology developed
the MundiScan based upon this laser and the
Heineken specification ( 2008 ) After a test
period of 6 months on a production line in
Heineken Zoeterwoude, the MundiScan became the
new standard for laser coder within
Heineken. Heineken now have 25 MundiScan laser
coders

MundiScan lasers are physically identical in a
316 grade stainless steel case, however there are
six principal variants 60W (9.35µm) 80W (10.6µm)
(180 Watt Peak Power) 100W (9.35µm) 120W PP
(10.6µm) (250 Watt Peak Power)
A 10.2µm laser is also possible to code laminates
etc Components are well proven in heavy
engineering and are over specified so 120W rated
laser has typical measured output 130-150 W

Benefits
Easy to integrate in small places. MundiScan has
a very small print head. Laser tube is in the
machine. Tube life 20K Hours laser on time (
microseconds on time per dot ). The oldest tubes
in the field are 6 years old we have yet to see
a failure. 50mm Ø articulated arm delivers
laser beam to the print head. Laser coder can
be mounted up in the air Not in the way for
operators. Clear and strong laser codes very
readable. Code creation by row rather than by
column creating a more consistent character set.

Many glass coding applications actually code onto
the Label High speed coding up to 73,000 bph
for a 2 line code with laser integration on
label station. Metalized labels are no
problem. On the label station the position of
the label is very accurately controlled

laser and galvo's allow multiple coding windows
on the same label. Text orientation can vary.

The 10.6µm wavelength laser can code
directly onto glass Very clear code on glass
using 250 Watt peak power. Peak power is achieved
by reducing the pulse frequency IE. creating and
releasing mini power surges Using this peak
power the glass is fused Bold characters possible
for better visibility No micro cracks in the
glass

MundiScan produces a very clear code on
PET by 9.35µm laser Bold characters possible for
better visibility. Code is foamed not engraved.
Code does not impinge upon integrity of
lightweight bottles Large focal length
(200mm) provides a big depth of field. This
means control of lens to product distance is less
critical

Mostly coding on conveyor post filler. Condensati
on on bottles, has detrimental effect on the
laser code. A drying device is needed before the
laser coder. Laser head can be angled to match
bottle contour ( neck ) High speed laser
required where bottles are very close
together MundiScan produces a very clear code on
PET by 9.35µm laser

Code quality of MundiScan on PET is very clear
and visible. Foaming The high speed of the
MundiScan laser allows a longer path length. The
Wobble function is used to make the
characters bold Additionally, the laser power
stresses the stretched PET creating a
whitening effect similar to that seen when too
much heat is used when bottle blowing
