Title: Figurative Language

1
Figurative Language
  • Objectives
  • We will be able to identify and use figurative
language in our reading and writing.
  • We will be able to differentiate between the
    different types of figurative language.

2
What is figurative language Mrs. Heady?
  • Im so glad you asked that question!!!
  • Figurative language is a tool that an author
employs (or uses) to help the reader visualize
(or see) what is happening in a story or poem.
Some common types of figurative language are
    simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia,
    idiom, puns, and sensory language.

3
Simile
  • A SIMILE is a figure of speech where X is
compared to Y, using the words AS or LIKE .
  • For example,
  • You are as pretty as a budding lilac.

4
Metaphor
  • A METAPHOR is a figure of speech where X is
compared to Y, and where X is said TO BE Y. A
METAPHOR says that X IS Y.
  • For example,
  • Sara is as happy as a lark.

5
Personification
  • Personification is when something that is not
    human becomes human.
  • For examplea talking pig!!!!
  • Charlottes Web
  • Beauty and the Beast

6
Alliteration
  • Alliteration is when the first letter in a word
    is repeated in several words.
  • For example,
  • Angela Abigail Applewhite ate anchovies and
    artichokes.
  • Bertha Bartholomew blew big, blue bubbles.
  • Dwayne Dwiddle drew a drawing of dreaded Dracula.
  • Greta Gruber grabbed a group of green grapes.

7
Onomatopoeia
  • An onomatopoeia is a word or a grouping of words
that imitates the sound it is describing.
  • For example,
  • Oink
  • Clank
  • Boom

8
Hyperbole
  • A hyperbole is an exaggeration. It is often
confused with a simile or a metaphor because it
    often compares two objects.
  • For example
  • His feet were as big as a barge.
  • I nearly died laughing.
  • I tried a thousand times.

9
Puns
  • A pun is a phrase thats funny.
  • For example,
  • I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger.
    Then it hit me.
  • Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side
was cut off? He's all right now .
  • I couldn't quite remember how to throw a
boomerang, but eventually it came back to me.

10
Idioms
  • a phrase that does not make any literal sense.
  • For example
  • Get your mind out of the gutter.
  • A Blessing In Disguise.
  • A Chip On Your Shoulder.
  • A Dime A Dozen.
