2QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN PART ONE THE
NATUROPATHIC APPROACH TO PROSTATE CANCER
- What is Naturopathic Medicine?
- What is Cancer?
- What is the Naturopathic approach to prostate
cancer treatment as compared to the standard
allopathic approach?
3QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN PART TWOTHE
MIND/BODY CONNECTION AND PROSTATE CANCER
- Does the mind have anything to do with the
development of prostate cancer? - What is the difference between the Conscious and
the Subconscious Minds and what are their roles
in the healing of prostate cancer? - Is the body electro-magnetic?
- What are the chakra systems and what are their
relationship to prostate cancer? - How do you work with the Subconscious Mind?
4What is Naturopathic Medicine?
- Naturopathic Medicine is a regulated health
profession that considers the whole person.
The goal of the Naturopathic Doctor is to address
the underlying causes of the illness and restore
normal functioning of the body where possible
through the use of natural substances and
treatments that enhance the bodys own natural
healing abilities.
5What Treatments are Provided by Naturopathic
Doctors?
- Naturopathic Doctors commonly use a combination
of the following healing modalities to provide
the patient with an individualized health care
program - Nutrition and Supplementation
- Botanical Medicine
- Homeopathy
- Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
- Spinal Manipulation
6- Individual Doctors may have a favourite modality
or other modalities that are included in the
practice. I use Applied Kinesiology (Muscle
Feedback) testing, the REBA testing device and
PsychoSomatic Energetics (PSE), Bio-Medical
Hypnosis and ASRT (Assisted Subconsicous
Repatterning Technique).
7How are Naturopathic Doctors Trained?
- Naturopathic Doctors registered to practice in
the province of Ontario must complete four years
of professional training at a recognized College
of Naturopathic Medicine. -
- Pre-admission requirements include a minimum of
three years of pre-medical studies at the
university level. - Training includes the basic medical sciences and
diagnostics, Naturopathic philosophy and
therapeutics as well as extensive clinical
experience a total of 5100 hours. - All graduating N.D.s must pass rigorous
provincial examinations set by the
government-appointed Board regulating the
profession to be eligible to practice as a
professional Naturopath in Ontario.
8Do Naturopathic Doctors Perform Examinations?
- Naturopathic Doctors take extensive patient and
family histories including information about
the patients diet and exercise habits, emotional
stressors and exposure to environmental hazards. - Naturopathic physicians are also trained and
entitled to perform most physical examinations
that would be expected of a General Medical
Practitioner. Relevant screening physical exams
are conducted when necessary or required by law.
9Do Naturopathic Doctors Use Drugs or Surgery?
- Naturopathic Doctors do not perform major surgery
or prescribe pharmaceutical drugs. Instead, We
rely on the use of natural substances and
conservative therapies to support and stimulate
healing. We are trained to recognize conditions
which require conventional medical treatment. In
these cases, patients are referred to the
appropriate medical practitioner or to the local
hospital.
10What Conditions and Illnesses Do Naturopathic
Doctors Treat?
- Virtually all chronic and acute conditions can
benefit from treatment by a Naturopathic Doctor.
After diagnosing specific conditions within
his/her scope of practice and after assessing
general health indicators, the Naturopathic
Doctor will initiate an effective and
individualized treatment program.
11Facts About Prostate Cancer
- It is primarily a disease of aging
- About 80 of all cases occur in men over 65
- By 80 years old, about 80 of all men have
prostate cancer to some degree - Tends to be slow growing (doubling in mass every
6 years) - There is a higher incidence in men who have a
first-degree relative with prostate cancer
African-American men married men men who have
recurrent prostatic infections or
sexually-transmitted diseases, and men who have
taken testosterone.
12What is Cancer?
- Cancer is a term that means abnormal growth of
new tissue (neoplasm) characterized by the
uncontrolled growth of cells that have changed in
structure and orientation, have lost
differentiation, and have reverted to a more
primitive form of cell (anaplastic) and tend to
invade surrounding tissue and to metastasize to
different body sites.
13What is Cancer (continued)?
- The key words here are abnormal cells,
changed and uncontrolled. Somehow normal
cells have been changed into abnormal. Regular
medicine utilizes the kill or be killed
mentality i.e., kill the cancer cells before they
kill you and utilizes chemotherapy/drug
therapy, hormonal therapy, radiation and surgery
in order to eradicate these cancer cells. - The primary functions of the Immune System can be
categorized as -
- 1) Surveillance, Detection and Identification
of Abnormal cells - ( by antibodies)
- 2) Removal of Abnormal cells (by white blood
cells). - The current pervading medical approach does not
take into account that the immune system
identifies and eliminates abnormal,
potentially-cancerous cells every second of every
day. I, as a Naturopathic Physician , recognize
this ability of the immune system and attempt to
enhance or help the immune system to be able to
once again identify and remove these abnormal
cells on its own preferably in a natural or
more non-invasive way. In certain cancers, it
may be possible in the future to revert cancer
cells to normal cells.
14What changes occur in a cancer cell to make it
abnormal?
- Loss of Contact Inhibition
- Potential changes in the polarized molecules
(e.g., electrolytes, minerals, amino acids) - DNA alterations
- Viruses (now 40 of our gene material), bacteria
or fungi - Toxicities e.g., heavy metals (lead, cadmium,
mercury), pollutants, electromagnetic radiation
etc.
15How does a Naturopathic Physician support the
body in its own healing of prostate cancer?
- 1) Modify the Cellular Environment
- It is well-known that the pH of the body
influences the growth of cells including cancer
cells. A more alkaline pH (within normal limits)
is the most advantageous to promote healing.
This is usually accomplished by manipulating the
diet i.e., reducing red meat and grain
consumption in favour of the white meats (fish
and fowl), and increasing the consumption of
fresh non-acid fruits and vegetables or through
the administration of supplements designed for
this purpose (like Basic Tabs). - 2) Modify the Diet
- The diet as much as possible should be
- Organic, high in antioxidants, high in
Zinc, high in Omega -3 fatty acids, low in dairy,
red meat, alcoholic beverages, coffee, high in
soya products (which have genistein that retards
tumor growth),lower in calcium (high levels
deplete vitamin D) -
16Healing of prostate cancer (continued)
- 3) Assess and Modify Digestion and
- Assimilation through the use of
digestive - enzymes or herbal preparations
- 4) Assess and Modify Cellular Metabolism
- through the use of supplements
- Does the body have enough co-enzymes
- (vitamins), co-factors (minerals), amino
- acids, trace minerals, essential fatty
acids?
17Healing of prostate cancer (continued)
- 5) Reduce toxicity
- A) Internally by supporting the organs of
- elimination e.g., liver, kidneys,
lungs, colon - (particularly important in prostate
cancer), skin - and lymphatics through supplemental or
- herbal support
- B) Externally through the use of lymphatic
- drainage, massage, saunas, colonics,
- acupuncture, reflexology etc.
18Healing of prostate cancer (continued)
- 6) Reduce stress and improve Lifestyle
- parameters through the use of imagery,
- meditation, self-hypnosis and NLP to
- mention only a few.
