I. What is Information technology (IT)?
  • The study, design, development, implementation,
    support or management of computer-based
    information systems, particularly software
    applications and computer hardware."
  • In short, IT deals with the use of electronic
computers and computer software to convert,
store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve
    information, securely.
  • Recently it has become popular to broaden the
term to explicitly include the field of
electronic communication so that people tend to
use the abbreviation ICT (Information and
    Communications Technology).
  • as defined by the Information Technology
    Association of America (ITAA)

5
II. Influences of IT
  • Changes our lifestyles
  • Change our ways of working and human relations
--unhindered flow of information and quick access
to the major wells of expertise in the world.
  • Improving our standard of living and culture.

6
III. Advantages and Disadvantages of IT
  • Before we can know about all the advantages and
disadvantages of information technology, it is
essential that we know what information
technology is exactly, and why it has it come to
play such a important role in our daily lives.
Today information technology involves more than
just computer literacy it also takes into
account how computers work and how these
computers can further be used not just for
    information processing but also for
communications and problem solving tasks as well.

7
  • IT can change the way businesses compete --vital
competitive networks, as a means of
organizational renewal, and as a necessary
investment in technologies that help an
enterprise achieve its strategic objectives. The
strategic role of information systems involves
using information technology to develop products,
services, and capabilities that give a company
strategic advantages over the competitive forces
it faces in the global marketplace.
  • B. Any kind of information system (TPS, MIS, DSS,
    etc.) helps an organization
  • 1. Gain a competitive advantage
  • 2. Reduce a competitive disadvantage
  • 3. Meet other strategic enterprise objectives

8
  • C. The public, democracy and equality -- The
equal rights of citizens shall be fortified with
the help of information technology. The latitude
of the people to influence legislation and the
organization of society, within the framework of
democracy, will be increased as much as possible.
In the information society education will not be
contingent upon residence and time as before. By
utilising the advantages of technology, access
can be assured for all countrymen to information
and knowledge. One of the roles of educational
and cultural institutions is working toward
    making this a reality.

Cyberinfrastructure the Second Revolution
  • Students from Nevada State College and the
University of Nevada at Las Vegas chat about
their academic and technological habits at The
    Chronicle's Technology Forum. Sarah Mihelic
(holding microphone) "My dad is still into the
whole book thing. He has not realized that the
Internet kind of took the place of that. So we go
to the library almost every Sunday." Photograph

  • Keeping up with information technology is a
crucial aspect of university presidents' jobs,
say James Martin and James E. Samels, of the
    Education Alliance.

What Web 2.0 Can Teach Us About Learning By
EDWARD J. MALONEY
  • The past 15 years have seen a significant
increase in the use of technology in higher
education. In fact, professors now find it
difficult to imagine teaching without the
    Internet, course-management systems, Microsoft
    Office, e-mail, and other technological
    applications. Meanwhile prospective students and
new faculty members increasingly judge colleges
and universities based on the educational
technologies they offer. And  especially in the
wake of Hurricane Katrina  many administrators
    are seeing e-learning technologies as
  • key components in academic continuity and
    emergency planning.

15
VI. The School should provide
  • 1. Technical Assistance
  • 2. Education and Training
  • 3. Materials Dissemination
  • 4. Information and Referral
  • 5. Public Awareness
  • 6. Capacity Building

16
VII. IT in Education Accessibility Checklist
  • Is your physical environment accessible?
  • Physical Access
  • Is your information technology environment
    accessible?
  • Computer Hardware and Software
    Websites Multimedia
    Telecommunications Products
    Self-Contained Closed
    Products
  • Information Resources Policies and
    Procedures
  • Support and Training
  • Do you have the accommodations your students need
    to access your information technology
    environment?
