• The best place to practice conserving resources
  is at home. Individuals can substantially
  REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE waste and conserve
  resources by practicing the following

REDUCE To cut the amount of WASTE used

• SOLID WASTE (consuming and conserving)
• Packaging
• Choose products with minimal packaging
• Paper Products
• Reduce the amount of paper products used
• Other
• Identify products and practices to reduce waste
  toxicity. (Batteries, pesticides, cleaners,
  polishes, deodorizers, etc.)
• REDUCE the amount of paper products used.

REDUCE To cut the amount of ENERGY used

• Lighting
• Use fluorescent, energy saving bulbs
• Use sunlight
• Surface Units
• Size of pansize of burner
• Use lids

• Refrigerators / Freezers
• Replace gaskets for a tight seal
• Close doors
• Ovens
• Keep door closed during cooking

• Faucets
• Repair leaks
• Dishwashing
• Wash by hand
• Wash then rinsecut water off when washing
• Run full loads
• Air dry

• Consider reusable products
• Maintain and repair durable products
• Reuse bags, containers, and other items

• Borrow, rent, or share items used infrequently
• Sell or donate goods instead of throwing them
  out.
• Be creative with leftovers and create new dishes.

RECYCLE Products that can be reprocessed to
making something new

• Solutions
• Choose recyclable products
• Select products made from recycled materials
• Compost yard clippings and some food scraps.
• Find creative ways to recycle disposable
  packages and products.

Assignment

• Choose 1 partner and create a poster that will
  serve as a public service announcement for
  someone that has no idea how to reduce, reuse,
  and recycle in the kitchen.
• Your poster should encourage the person to use
  conservation techniques!
• Include information from the previous notes,
  pictures, reasons why conservation is important,
  and PICTURES OR GRAPHICS!
