Planning FacilitiesBring the Plan to Life
Richard D Smith
2
Planning Facilities
  • In order to facilitate professional planning, we
need to create a professional environment to
    undertake the planning within.
  • Meeting rooms seem to be at a premium, so the
idea behind a phase or stage meeting rooms, is
that an area or room is dedicated to planning
  • The room then needs to be equipped correctly
  • If people then need information or need to
discuss the plan, then all the relevant
information is displayed within the dedicated
    room
  • Ensuring that our delivery / project offices and
established correctly is key, anyone walking into
a project office should understand from the
information displayed, what the project is and
    what the objectives are.

3
Area Maps
  • Area maps are key to people understanding of the
    local area
  • The maps should display (but not limited to)
  • Roads
  • Key depots
  • The Railway
  • Local names
  • Access points
  • Stations
  • Level Crossings
  • Key Junctions

4
Route Maps
  • Route maps are key to people understanding the
    detail
  • The maps should display (but not limited to)
  • Bridges
  • Level Crossings
  • SC
  • Access Points
  • Signals

5
Actions
  • Key to any successful meeting is recording
    actions
  • Key here is recording them once and then ensuring
    everyone understands the actions
  • Displaying them on the wall ensures that the
meeting becomes more interactive and involves
    everyone in the session

6
Activity Maps
  • Activity maps, to display scope and work being
undertaken within the worksite or possession

7
Box Plan
  • Box plans display activities / possessions by
    week and location
  • The Box has the work type, work detail, location,
possession duration and the PPS numbers, together
    with the DWWP RAG rating

8
Progress / Lessons Learnt
  • Key to engaging resources is feeding back on
    progress and lessons learnt.
  • Its important to ensure project information is
displayed for all to review and understand
  • An area should be dedicated to showing progress
    and communicating key project information

Planning facilities
Implemented at Finsbury Park, with a view to a
roll out across the SNE programme. The Mission
Room allows virtual access to different parts of
the site and significantly reduces the need for
many costly and hazardous real site visits.
Immersive clips of the site can be used for
dilapidation surveys, planning and whiteboard
meetings where complex operations need to be
communicated quickly and clearly.
Improved white board briefing facilities are
being trialled at Peterborough, these include the
use of interactive whiteboards and the use of
magnetic information and action boards. These
facilities are all about setting a professional
standard for planning and briefing of project and
site based resources.

Site Establishment
Signing on point, briefing point
