- What if I decide that along with my Masters

Certification?
9What Is National Board Certification?
- A voluntary process established by NBPTS
- Achieved through a rigorous, performance-based
assessment aimed to measure what accomplished
teachers should know and be able to do while
demonstrating how their performance improves
student achievement - An advanced credential that complements a state
license - Three years of teaching experience required for
candidacy - Open to all- public, private, charters
10The Research
- Majority of studies indicate that National Board
Certification makes a significantly positive
impact on teacher performance and student
learning, engagement and achievement - Teachers who pursue certification show
significant improvement in their teaching
practice, whether they achieve certification or
not - All else being equal, teachers who have achieved
National Board Certification helped their
students achieve larger testing gains than did
colleagues without the certification
11YOUR performance is measured against NBPTS
tools and processes

- NBCT certificate standards in (disciplinary
fields) - Architecture of Accomplished Teaching
- Component 2, 3, 4
- Evidence of Impact on Students

20Whats the NBPTS process? 2014/2017
- Flexibility - While teachers can complete the
entire certification process in one year once it
is fully implemented, some may choose to do so
over several years if that fits better with other
demands on a teachers time. - Affordability - The total cost of certification
is 1900, with each of the four components
costing 475. Candidates will have the option to
pay for and submit components separately.
21The Design of the 2014/2017 Process
- The 2014 process for National Board Certification
will be comprised of 4 components
22Component 1 Content Knowledge
- Administered at computer centers
- Short answer and possible multiple choice
questions depending on certificate areas - All questions build to create ONE score for this
component - Prepare for assessment center after the portfolio
is completed (April-June) - This Component is currently in field testing
and will be open for NBPTS use in the 2014/2015
cycle
23Component 2 Differentiation in Instructions (NBC
683)
- Written Commentary using Student Work Samples
- Traditionally, in this component, you provide a
Written Commentary that analyzes how you ASSESS
student learning in your own classroom utilizing
your own content standards - typically following
2 students over a course of time
AYA ScienceIn this entry, you choose three
instructional activities, related instructional
materials, two student responses to each
activity, and a culminating assessment, and you
submit a Written Commentary. Your submission
should demonstrate your strategies for linking
instructional activities together to engage
students in building conceptual understanding of
one major idea in science.
24Component 3 Teaching Practice and Classroom
Environment(NBC 682)
- Written commentary using Video evidence
- Traditionally, in this component, you provide a
Written Commentary that analyzes your teaching
through video taping whole class or small group
discussion.
AYA Science In the past, in this entry you
submit a 20-minute video recording of your
interactions with students as they actively gain
an ability to understand and use scientific
concepts and problem-solving skills. (Small/whole
class?)
25Component 4 Effective and Reflective
Practitioner (NBC 681)
- Written Commentary using Professional
Contributions - In this component, you use Written Commentary to
show impact on student learning using evidence
through PROFESSIONAL contributions with
families/communities, as a learner, and as a
leader/collaborator - Traditionally, you must demonstrate how your work
in each of three categories impacts student
learning - As partner with students families and community
- As learner
- As collaborator and/or leader
26Scoring
- All FOUR components must receive an Accomplished
Score - You may bank scores for two years and retake
Component for a fee
27How will the assessment roll-out?
- National Board Certification will rollout over
the course of three cycles
2014-15
2015-16

standards and your portfolio requirements will
drive and guide your understanding and search for

considered based on their experiences,
resourcefulness, knowledge of best practices
and the NBCT process.
