Childsmile is a national programme designed to
improve the oral health of children in Scotland
and reduce inequalities both in dental health and

Background

• Pathway involves public health nurses, dental
  health support workers, dental nurses and
  dentists
• Pilot from Sept 2010 March 2011 and reported in
  May 2011
• Roll out to all health boards from October 2011
• Based on Getting it Right principles

Integration with Pre-school Child Health
Surveillance

• Pathway initiated by referral decision at 6-8
  week assessment
• Universal assessment
• Can record and track decision making
• Data linkage with dental databases at ISD
• 24-30 month assessment

Further Developments

• Local board areas developing wider access to
  patient management systems e.g. Lanarkshire and
  Ayrshire Arran
• Data linkage piloting in Autumn 2012
