Arthropods
2
What structures make an Arthropod an Arthropod?
  • Jointed Legs
  • Hard Exoskeleton

3
Interesting Facts
  • Arthropods have an exoskeleton that does not grow
along with the animal so it must be shed from
time to time leaving the animal vulnerable to
    attack.
  • They live on land and in water.
  • There are more species of arthropods than any
    other animal species combined.
  • An estimated 80 of all animals are Arthropods.

4
Interesting Facts (Cont.)
  • The success of arthropods is related to their
    hard exoskeleton, segmentation, and jointed
appendages. The appendages are used for feeding,
    sensory reception, defense, and locomotion.

5
Classes (main groups) of Phylum Arthropoda
  • Class
  • Crustaceans (Lobsters, Crayfish, Shrimp and more)
  • Class
  • Arachnids (Spiders with 8 legs and 3 body
    sections)
  • Class
  • Centipedes
  • Class
  • Millipedes
  • Class
  • Trilobites (extinct)
  • Class
  • Insecta (Insects with 6 Legs, 3 body sections,
    and an exoskeleton)

6
Crustaceans
  • Have gills and live in a watery place

7
Arachnids
  • They have eight legs, two body sections and an
    exoskeleton (outside skeleton).

Centipedes
  • Carnivores, Legs out to the side of body

9
Millipedes
  • Many little legs under the body
