2DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE
- Local and international tourists will be offered
a unique opportunity to tap into the life of
Maroon villages Kaaimanston and Witagron. They
will have the chance to experience the everyday
life of Maroons by - planting vegetables, collecting exotic fruits,
- old-time fishing,
- collecting wood in the rain forest to prepare for
cooking in a traditional way, - preparing wine from sugar cane, picking coconuts,
- making their own instruments and playing music,
dancing and singing along, - learning about traditional medicine,
- magical story telling.
3DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE
- Tourists will be offered a unique opportunity to
tap into the life of Agriculture in Saramacca.
They will have the chance to experience the
everyday life in the farm by - Taking part of activities how vegetables are
grown and harvest. - Fishing in the swamp and/or small irrigation
canals. - Harvest fruits and vegetables, cut it and learn
how to prepare a surinamese dish. - Other field activities to farmers in the area,
e.g. how pindasambel, tahoe, coconutoil etc. is
made. - Staying overnight in a house and enjoy the warmth
of a camp fire, peace and quite of the nature and
wake up in the morning by singing birds. - Learning about local medicine plant,
- Magical story telling.
4DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE
- This cluster intitative will focus on developing
the knowledge, attitudes and capacity of the
villagers by training and supporting them to
perform their part of the tourist experience. - Creating (replicating) village, agro-based
tourism in villages of Saramacca district hosting
tourists in farmers homes, offering activities
unique to Saramacca.
5STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE For Kaaimanston and Witagron
- Economic and social development of villages in
the Upper Coppename River region generating
more income for villagers from tourism. - Prevent urban migration and social problems
related to unemployment of villagers in
Paramaribo. - New opportunities for women to generate their own
income in villages. - Diversified and more sustainable development by
creating job opportunities in tourism besides
small-scale mining. - Prepare and train villagers for forest
preservation tasks which are expected to be
entrusted to them. - Village cultural heritage preservation and
revival.
