1
Pathfinder Office and the Trimble Recon
The Recon is the newest of the rovers, and unlike
other units, it comes with software installed on
the unit as well as using software installed on
the computer. The Recon comes with ActiveSync
pre-installed. In order to let the Recon
communicate with your computer, we must install
ActiveSync on it as well. ActiveSync compares
the data on your Recon with the data on the PC
and then updates one or the other with the most
recent information. If you havent already read
the Getting Started Guide that came with your
Recon then now would be a good time to do so.
2
How to Install Active Sync
  • To transfer data from your Recon, you will need
install Microsofts ActiveSync on your PC.
  • Make sure that the Recon is not connected to the
PC. Make sure to logon on to your PC as
    Administrator.
  • Locate the Recon Pocket Companion CD that came
with your Trimble Recon. If you have the cd then
skip to slide number and follow the
    instructions for installing.
  • If you cant find it then you may download the
most current version of ActiveSync at
  • http//www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?F

  • Continue to the next slide for downloading
    instructions from the website.

3
3. Scroll down to the setup.exe and click on
the Download button to the right. 4.
Click on the Save button
4
  1. Save the setup.EXE file in C\temp.
  2. When the download is complete click on the Run
    button.
  3. When the next box pops up click on the Run
    button again.

5
7. You now will be prompted to install the
software Click on the Next button. 8.
Next you will be asked to select a folder for
installation. We want to leave the default
settings. So just click on the Next button to
finish the installation.
6
  • Immediately after the software is installed, a
wizard will guide you through the installation.
  • A Dialog box called Get Connected will pop up.
Now you want to connect the Recon using the USB
    cable supplied.
  • Wait for a few seconds while ActiveSync searches
for the Recon. If successful, you will see the
window to the right. Select the Guest
    partnership option, then click Next.
  • When youre finished you will see the window to
the right and a new, green icon in your tray.

7
If you do not successfully connect, make sure the
Recon is powered up and that the USB connection
to the PC are secure. Disconnect the Recon from
the PC, wait about 5 seconds, and then securely
reconnect it. ActiveSync should try to connect.
If you are still not successful, disconnect the
Recon from the PC and restart your PC. After you
log on to your account, and your desktop is
loaded, reconnect the USB cable from the Recon.
The ActiveSync software will attempt to connect.
When it has successfully connected, you will see
the green icon (it will be grey if it did not
connect) in the system tray. IMPORTANT NOTE
In general, if you log off or restart your PC,
you need to disconnect the Recon before you log
on again. Connect the Recon only after your
desktop loads. If you still have problems,
disconnect the Recon and uninstall the ActiveSync
software (using Add/Remove Programs). Repeat the
installation process, carefully following all
instructions. Once the ActiveSync software is
installed and recognizes the Recon it will run in
the background. You will use Pathfinder Office
2.9 to transfer data between the Recon and the PC.
8
Installing TerraSync on the Recon
Now that the computer and the Recon are able to
communicate with one another, we need to get
Recon to communicate with the satellites. In
order to do this, we will need to install some
software called TerraSync. The TerraSync CD
should have arrived with the Trimble Recon and
the Pocket GPS receiver.
Make sure the Recon is connected to the PC with
the USB cable.
9
Installing TerraSync
9. When you put the TerraSync CD into the
computer, the Main Menu window should come up.
Select Install. Yours might be a newer version
than the one below.
10. We want to install this software to our
Trimble Recon, so select Install to a Windows CE
device.
10
  • You will now see a series of installation
options. In the Welcome screen, make sure
that the software will be installed under the
drive that houses the Program Files and click
    Next.
  • Say Yes to agree to the terms and conditions on
    the Software License Agreement screen.
  • Type in EAST as the name for the Customer
    Information page and click Next.
  • 14. When you get to the Customer Information
screen, type in the Serial Number and
Authorization Key that came with the software.
Most likely, you will find this information on
the CD case. When this is done, click Next.

11
  1. On this screen, check the information that you
    have entered.

If it is correct, click Next.
16. A window should have prompted you to click
No towards the beginning of installation. Click
OK here.
17. Click No to install TerraSync in the
default directory. This will allow you install it
in the permanent directory.
12
18. The permanent directory is the Disk
directory. Select Disk from the drop-down list
and click OK. Your installation is now
complete!
Now, you should be able to communicate with the
satellites and collect GPS data. The next step
is to transfer a data dictionary to our rover and
move outside for collection.
13
  1. Now if you have done everything correctly then
the box on the left will appear. Just click on
    Next.
  2. You will then be prompted to check for updates
    and to register your software.
  3. Now it is time to do a soft reset on your Recon.
If you dont know how then look at your Recon
    Getting Started Guide.

Now, you should be able to communicate with the
satellites and collect GPS data. The next step
is to transfer a data dictionary to our Recon and
move outside for collection.
14
Loading a Data Dictionary
Prior to going outside with your GPS rover to
collect data for your school map, you must load a
data dictionary onto your rover. A data
dictionary is a digital list of point, line, and
area features along with their associated
attributes and values that will be collected
during a field session.
15
  • You should already have the Pathfinder Office
installed on your computer. If it is not
installed then located your discs and install it
    now.
  • Connect your USB cable from your Recon to the
computer so that the Recon can communicate with
    Pathfinder Office.
  • 2. Turn the the unit on.

Here, we have Recon with the USB cable attached.
16
The data dictionary has been created using
Trimbles GPS Pathfinder Office application. If
you havent done so already, you must download
the data dictionary created for you.

gProject/schoolmap.ddf 3. To launch
Pathfinder Office, go to the Start menu, and
then to All Programs. Look for the GPS
Pathfinder Office folder. Then click on the icon
for GPS Pathfinder Office.
17
4. The Select Project window is the first
window you will see when Pathfinder Office opens
up. Click the New button.
5. For project name, type School Map. Click
OK. Then click OK in the Select Project
window.
7. When the data transfer window opens up, wait
for the communications port to make the
connection. If it doesnt connect then switch
the device setting to GIS Datalogger on Windows
CE When the connection is made, click on the
Send tab and Add Data Dictionary.
6. Now go to the Utilities menu and select Data
Transfer.
18
8. Browse for and select the data dictionary
that you downloaded with the data for this
exercise. Click Open.
9. Click on Transfer All and wait for the file
to complete the transfer.
You should have downloaded the data dictionary
before you started this power point. If you
dont have your data dictionary then go to back
to the school mapping web page to get it!
10. Once the transfer is complete, you will see
a message similar to the one above, indicating
the success of your transfer. Click the Close
button.
19
Now, to configure your GPS for recording data,
refer to the chapter 5 power point that addresses
your specific unit. (Geo II, Geo 3, XM, or Recon)
