2nd Bush-Gore Debate, Oct. 2000
  • Somalia. Started off as a humanitarian mission
then changed into a nation-building mission, and
that's where the mission went wrong. The mission
was changed. And as a result, our nation paid a
price. And so I don't think our troops ought to
    be used for what's called nation-building. I
think our troops ought to be used to fight and
win war. I think our troops ought to be used to
help overthrow a dictator sic when it's in our
best interests. But in this case, it was a
nation-building exercise. And same with Haiti, I
    wouldn't have supported either.

Bush Inauguration 2005
  • We are led, by events and common sense, to one
conclusion The survival of liberty in our land
increasingly depends on the success of liberty in
other lands. The best hope for peace in our world
is the expansion of freedom in all the world
  • So it is the policy of the United States to seek
and support the growth of democratic movements
and institutions in every nation and culture,
with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our
    world.
