Title: AP/Honors Night

1
AP/Honors Night
  • WELCOME!

2
What is the Honors and Advanced Placement Program?
  • We offer nine Honors classes across the English,
Social Studies, Science, and Math departments
  • We offer 18 AP classes
  • across all departments

3
What are Honors classes like?
  • These classes have a more rigorous and
    challenging curriculum than non-honors classes.
  • A strong work ethic and high level of motivation
    is expected of students.
  • Although honors classes do have an increased
workload and are more advanced, most honors
courses do not receive a weighted grade.
  • These classes also help prepare students for
    future AP classes.

4
What are AP classes like?
  • AP courses are designed and updated annually to
reflect what is being taught in cutting-edge
    college courses.
  • Students receive an external evaluation the AP
Examwhich is scored by college faculty and high
school teachers from around the world who verify
that the student has mastered college-level
    studies.

5
Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses give
you a head start on college.
  • Taking the end-of-course AP Exam sends a powerful
message to colleges and universities that a
student is ready for them, and can enable
students to gain admission, college credit, and
    placement into advanced courses.

6
Prepare to Succeed in College
  • AP Courses can help you acquire the skills and
habits youll need to be successful in college.
Youll improve your writing skills, sharpen your
    problem-solving abilities, and develop time
    management skills.
  • Most four-year colleges give students credit,
advanced placement or both on the basis of AP
Exam scores. By entering college with AP credits,
youll have the time to move into upper level
courses, pursue a double-major or study abroad.

7
Why should I take the AP Exam even if Im not
looking to earn credit or placement?
  • Stand out in the admissions process
  • Earn academic scholarships and awards
  • Experience a college-level test
  • Be a step ahead

8
In 2012
  • 497 Culver students took a total of 917 exams.
  • 71 earned a score of 3 or higher. (The
comparable in rate in California is 64)
  • Success on an AP exam is defined as a score of
3 or higher, which represents the score point
that research finds predictive of college success
    and college graduation.

9
Financial Aid
  • Currently, AP Exams are approximately 92 per
    test.
  • There is extensive financial aid available for
those families falling below the federal income
    poverty level.

10
Summer Work for Honors and AP Classes
  • Must be completed by all students by registration
    (middle of August).
  • Applies toward fall semester grade.
  • Will be posted by the middle of June on the high
    school website (cchs.ccusd.org).
  • Helps to maintain skills during summer break.
