Preparation
  • No different from face-to-face interviews
  • will be asked similar questions
  • professional positive image
  • first impressions still count
  • Prior to the call ensure you have
  • CV/cover letter/application for reference
  • note pad and pen for note taking
  • your diary to take details and times of any
    future contact mentioned
  • a glass if water
  • your questions ready
  • Practise speaking clearly
  • avoid mumbling
  • avoid speaking too fast
  • avoid abbreviations
  • Research the job and organisation thoroughly

Practicalities
  • CHECK
  • Correct phone number
  • Fully charged mobile
  • Use a hands-free/headset if possible
  • Find a quiet place where you wont be disturbed
  • Avoid rustling of papers

The Interview
  • Make a note of the name of the interviewer
  • Smile! This can actually be heard in your voice
    and conveys a positive attitude and enthusiasm
  • Listen very carefully to the questions you are
    asked dont be afraid to ask for clarification
    if you dont hear or didnt understand
  • Answer the questions precisely
  • Dont be put off by silences the interviewer
    will be making notes of what youre saying

Types of questioning
  • Biographical educational background, degree
    choice etc.
  • Competency based - also known as a behavioural,
    situational or evidence-based questioning are
    designed to assess if a candidate possesses
    certain key competencies.
  • Tell me about a time when
  • Give me an example of.
  • Describe a situation where you.

STAR technique
  • SITUATION give an example of a situation you
    were involved in
  • TASK- describe the task involved and what you
    needed to achieve
  • ACTION - what did you do, how did you do it and
    what skills did you use?
  • RESULT- what results directly followed due to
    your actions- what did you accomplish/learn?

  • Question 1-Tell me about a time you had to meet
    multiple deadlines in a short period. How were
    you able to accomplish this?
  • Question 2- Describe a time when you worked in a
    really effective team. What made it effective?
    How did you in particular contribute?

Question 1
  • SITUATION - multiple deadlines
  • TASK - approach to this
  • ACTION - communicating with tutors/employees,
    prioritising workload, using schedules/timetables
    to organise this and prioritise time
  • RESULT- completed both pieces of work to deadline

Question 2
  • SITUATION - group project/working in a team
  • TASK effectively working within that team
  • ACTION - identify chairperson, set objectives,
    individual actions/responsibilities, regular
    communication with each other
  • RESULT - clear objectives, roles,
    responsibilities, more effective team meetings,
    better end result!
  • Use examples from internships, work experience,
    volunteering, group projects and extra curricular
    activities
  • Remember to be specific to question
