How Do We Construct a Topographic profile?

• Objective To accurately construct a profile
  along any two points on a contour map.

DO NOW Draw a side view along points XY of the
surface feature shown in the map.

Step 1 Number all contour lines above the line
XY.

Step 2 Draw a horizontal grid that represent the
distance XY. (done for you)

Step 3 Transfer the points where the contour
lines cross the points XY from the contour map to
a paper.

Step 4 Transfer the points from the paper to the
bottom of the grid..

Step 5 Mark off the corresponding elevation for
each points on the grid and connect the points
with a smooth curved line.
That is what a map profile looks like.

Profiles are never shaded in but the next slide
is shaded to give a more dramatic effect of the
topography.
