Needs Assessment
  • This instructional online tutorial on designing
and developing a cookbook will provide the Life
Skills teacher and paraprofessionals with the
opportunity to acquire new skills using Microsoft
Publisher 2007. They will be able to immediately
use those skills to incorporate within their Life
Skills curriculum to better serve their students.

3
Needs Assessment
  • The Life Skills teacher and paraprofessionals
need the ability to document and publish examples
of the cooking and life skills that students are
    acquiring during the school year.
  • The end product, a Life Skills cookbook, would
serve as a learning and assessment tool for
    teacher and students.

4
Needs Assessment
  • Through the online tutorial, the Life Skills
teacher and paraprofessionals will be introduced
to an overview of Microsoft Publisher and a
step-by-step guide to the basic design tools in
the software program allowing them to create and
    format a cookbook.
  • After completing the online tutorial, the Life
Skills teacher and paraprofessionals will be able

Learner Characteristics
  • The target audience for this web-based training
will be one Life Skills teacher and three
    paraprofessionals ranging from ages 22-60
    employed at Waxahachie High School.
  • The learners will possess basic computer skills
to run a desktop and/or laptop PC computer and
    also to navigate the Internet.
  • Additional information that would be necessary
for the design of the training module would be
the current version of Microsoft Publisher used
in the workplace, whether version 2003, 2007 or
    2010.

16
Learning Context
  • The intended instructional setting will be
primarily in the workplace setting, specifically
a Life Skills classroom in a high school.
  • A campus computer in the high school with
Internet access, such as in the school library or
a computer lab, will also meet the training
    requirements.
  • If time constraints and work-related
responsibilities do not permit access at the
workplace, then a computer with Internet access
outside the workplace, e.g., home computer, will
    do.

17

Formative Evaluation
  • My aunt who is a Life Skills teacher at
Waxahachie High School will serve as a Subject
Matter Expert in reviewing the different
components of the cookbook and its contents. A
friend who is familiar with MS Office 2007
software will serve as a peer reviewer and
evaluate the effectiveness of the Publisher
    software used in this project.
  • I will rely on the feedback provided by both
reviewers to make appropriate changes to the
online tutorial whether it requires additional
sections for specific content in the Life Skills
curriculum or whether elements of the software
program should be included or excluded.

30
Summary
  • By completing this online tutorial, Life Skills
teachers and paraprofessionals will be able to
create and design a cookbook containing the
important elements of their classrooms Life
    Skills curriculum.
  • Not only will they learn about MS Publisher 2007,
but they will also learn how to incorporate the
design elements in this software program and
    create a cookbook.
  • This cookbook will serve as an example of all the
hard work, by teachers and students alike,
    throughout the school year.
